Rumor has it the Leafs might be working out a trade to send kaberle to Pit, for Jordan Staal. Who wins this trade?

Also I wasn't suggesting Pitts trade him to improve, my hypothetical was based on Staal wanting to leave the team, to be a no. 1 or at least 2 somewhere else or play with a brother. That was the thinking behind the Pitts vs Carolina what if scenario.

Should probably clear something up. Never said they were getting traded or that they should be or that the management wants them to. Eventually, and by that I mean at the end of their contracts, you would have to think it will be impossible to keep them all and still ice a good product beyond them.

I don't think Pittsburgh will get full value for Staal right now. Malkin or Crosby would probably fetch an entire team by themselves on the trade market (kidding), but Staal won't get that type of value. What the Penguins might want to do if they find themselves needing to get rid of one is letting Staal play on the top line and seeing how he does (maybe throw him on the wing, or see how Crosby fares at that position.) Then, when his stats skyrocket, they would be in an incredible position.

Why would they want to get rid of any of the three?? I mean, 2 trips to the finals and a Cup in 2 years?? All three are signed for at least 3 more season???

I agree that if one will be moved, the value would be with Malkin or Crosby. But, Lemieux also understands the passion of not only Pitt fans but Canadian hockey fans. I would suggest that Malkin is the one traded, but that's not happening for at least 3 years. Unless there is a significant drop in performance, none of those guys are leaving Steel Town anytime soon.

Definatly not in Pitts favor. They wouldn't even consider Goligoski for Pitkanen straight up. If Carolina wanted to make a deal for Staal and Goligoski the other Staal would have to go the other way.

Dunno, don't think Pitty's getting enough in that deal really. Def could get more elsewhere....

Staal (4MM cap) and Goligoski (1.833MM Cap) for
Pitkanen (4MM Cap), Jokinen (1.7MM Cap) + Boychuk.

Carolina gets Staal (age 20) and with this brother are the future of Carolina, Goligoski is a replacement (sort of) for Pitkanen

Pittsburgh gets a solid offensive dman (age 25) at a reasonable price, Jokinen is a throw in and Boychuk is a 19yr old center who could replace Staal.

I don't think Pittsburgh would make this deal, but it would be cool to see the Staal brothers together, now all they would need is to Trade something for Marc and some prospects for Jared and they got the whole fam.

Thats actually a solid deal. Makes sense for both teams.

I give it maybe 5 years until all the Staal's wear the same jersey...

really?> you would rather kessel to the 6ft 4 245 lbs 20 year old with 3 nhl seasons expirence who has not been hurt at all, don't forget Staal would be putting up 80 points a year easy f he wasn't playing the third line in pitts

If this trade was to occur, Toronto wins this in a landslide. Take nothing away from Kaberle, who is a great defensemen. But Staal is a complete beast, and is argueable one of the best shutdown centres in the league. Couple this with the fact that he has an offensive ability as well, it's huge.

I would compare Jordan Staal to Mike Richards. The problem is that Staal is in a line up with the 2 top scoring players in the NHL for the same position.

TO would win this deal in a big way and as another poster said, this deal doesn't happen without more piece from TO's roster going to Pitt.
MSC Posted - 07/16/2009 : 08:55:46
Pitts does not need a puck moving D man...A deal for Staal would have to include Beachimen and Grabovski...minimum.
Matt_Roberts85 Posted - 07/16/2009 : 07:38:38
Pitt wont be dealing Staal until they are in cap hell. Id be absolutley shocked if this happened. Id love to see it though...

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E".
Guest9838 Posted - 07/16/2009 : 07:04:31
didn't this rumour come up a year or two ago... not a bad trade though both ways.
Rambo2305 Posted - 07/16/2009 : 05:16:24
Neither team..

Pittsburgh loses a sold part of their offensive game, while Toronto loses a main part of their defensive core...

For a deal like this to work, it would have to look like this...

To Toronto:
- F Jordan Staal
- Defensive Prospect

To Pittsburgh
- D Tomas Kaberle
- Offensive prospect
