Posted - 08/27/2009 : 00:06:43 I'm on the same page here, J. Staal is likely just at the camp to "get his feet wet". I consider Doughty in the same spot. Both are excellent players, but just a few years too soon for them. If the Olympics were in 2012, they'd have a better shot! |

Completely agree. The one thing about the Canadian team that is a blessing and a curse is the redonkulous depth at the centre position. And there are only so many centres that have the wear with all to be effective wingers. Stall is not on the 2010 team, but if the NHL sends players to the 2014 Olympics, it would be hard to keep him off at that point. Let's not forget that he won't be old enough to drink in the States for another few weeks. He will not even be in his prime at the next Olympics. |

Posted - 08/26/2009 : 11:06:19 Yes, he does deserve a spot. Alot of players 'deserve' a spot but is he willing to get in there and out work his counter parts for a spot. His role will undoubtedly be a checking role, but still the best offensive checking line ever as Canada always has. I like the 3rd line to be Mike richards, J. Staal and Doan. |

Posted - 08/26/2009 : 06:15:59 After much thought, most definitely yes.
Doan is a guy who has great goal scoring and playmaking skills, but is also a character guy who can effectively play on a checking line. There are higher skilled guys to put on that third line, but they would be out of their natural position, and would not be able to perform checking line duties as effectively as Doan.
The times Canada has done their best at international competitions is when we have a solid checking line.

Posted - 08/26/2009 : 06:12:16 Morrow's going to have to have a hell of a first couple months to make the team. I like the idea of Doan Richards Morrow, but if the guy has lost a step being off the ice and out of competition for so long, the pot might be better filled by someone else.
Doan, if he's on the team (which I think he should be for all the reasons stated by everyone else) would definately be deserving of an "A", and I think more so than guys like Vinny, Eric Staal, Thornton, etc.
I'm looking at Niedermayer "C", Iginla "A", Doan "A" unless Nieds doesn't make it then Iginla "C", Doan "A", Crosby/Richards "A" |

Guys like Morrow, Doan, Smyth, ect fit that role perfect. Agree with almost everything you said. Except for Smyth. I like him like I like Savard. Great players. But not within my top Canadian 12 forwards. I might even choose a guy like J. Staal or Toews over Smyth based on skill and speed. Leadership which is Smyth's other quality, we have by the bucket full already with the likes of Iggy, Doan, M. Richards, E. Staal, Pronger, Nieds ....
I say Doan is a lock. Especially with M. Richards and Morrow as his line mates. I can't think of a better "3rd line". Smyth if he makes it will be fighting with the likes of Marleau, Lucic, Toews, J. Staal and host of others to be on the 4th line. |

Posted - 08/25/2009 : 17:42:46 I think that people forget about the pluggers that are needed on any team to win. To think back on 2002, Peca and Nolan had as much to do with the Gold Medal as Lemieux and Sakic did.
Seriously, the deciding factor in these Olympics will be defense. The Russian and Sweds are, in my opinion, better offensively than Canada. The Fins, Czechs and US are as good as Canada offensive. So, without the pluggers, who is going to slow down Ovechkin, Malkin, and Kovalchuk??? Who will slow down the Sedins?? Serious, this Canada team needs at least 3 guys that will get dirty, play defense, and plug. Guys like Morrow, Doan, Smyth, ect fit that role perfect. Most of the talk goes to the sexy spots like goalie, 1st line forward, and who's playing the point in the PP. But the winner of this Gold Medal will have the best 3rd line. Canada can put together one that is better than anyone else specifically because of players like Doan. Above that, when has the guy ever said no to his country.
If Doan is not there, Yzerman will immediately go down a couple of notches in my books. |

Posted - 08/25/2009 : 15:42:44 in the thread "2010 team canada roster" i had doan on the 4th line with lucic and lecaivailer centering it. this is a somewhat similiar line to yours and would also be tough to score on and can also provide some offense. i would also go as far to say that he is a lock, but as for the A, i don't no. there r alot of guys who r going to b on this team, who r leaders on there nhl team. Lecavailer, crosby, iginla and mike richards, just to name a few! But i would agree that doan would be in the runnin for an A |

Posted - 08/25/2009 : 15:25:30 I firmly believe yes i think there are very few locks for this team I think Doan is deffinetly one of them, and i would go as far as to say he should have the A on his jersey, obviously he won't be on the top 2 lines but i could see an amazing 4th trio of Richards centering Doan and Morrow, this line would but tough to score against they are all great 2 way player with the speed and toughness to match up with any of the other countrys top lines!
