And I'm not even sure the Leafs D looks better on paper. As good as Komi is at hitting and blocking shots, he WILL drive you guys nuts with his giveaways. |

As Beans said, it depends on what you are looking for. Overall, I think they are quite comparable, I would give the defensive advantage to the Leafs, but the offensive advantage to the Habs. Outside of Gill, the Leafs backend just isn't as mobile. I keep hearing alot about how the Leafs 'D' will knock you out, and there is no doubt about that, but don't sell the Habs 'D' short on that, they DO have size and strength back there.
I think the intangible here is the system Martin is putting in place. |

For the record the Habs D is bigger in height and weight. Secondly the Habs D are definitely better offensively, I think TO is missing just that one other puck moving defensemen which they had in Kubina. But they do have Ian White to move in when needed as the 8th D.
TO definitely is more of a grittier and hitting D, but the Habs have more talent I would say. For what D I would pick today it wouldn't matter because the leafs don't have the complimentary offense to coincide with their D, yet that is.
A little off topic but honestly from what I have seen from 1st round picks this year Kadri is in my books the most impressive (offensively anyways, and by this I mean he isn't the BEST but he isn't that far from the top of the crop), he is a flashy and skilled guy who I think should make this team this year, doubt he will but he is not far from the NHL level. From there TO will build with the likes of Kadri, Kessel, Grabovski, Bozak, etc. so they shouldn't be too bad soon enough. |

Actually I think you have to give the Offensive and Defensive advantage to Montreal, but the Toughness and intangibles go to TO. The top three Dmen for Montreal are quite offensively talented where as Kaberle is the only TO dman to find the net regularly. That being said sometimes the dmen set the tone for the game and a well placed check to the opponents star player can turn a game fast. I dont know which d corp I prefer. I wish my team had depth at defense. |

The first test of who is better will come on Oct 1. Opening night. I will be there and will be more then willing to give a full report.
Right now, I think the talent and the toughness belong to the Leafs. I like that they kept Kaberle. The question is will the toughness take away from the talent and make the defence worse then it should be. The Leafs are also younger on the back end and are set for a few seasons.
I think the edge goes to the Habs for defensive defenseman. With Markov the key to the offense from the blueline.
Overall I think it is pretty close between the two clubs. I think the Habs d will end up looking better because of higher finish in the standings at the end of the year. |

Leafs for sure.
Exelby is an absolute beast. schenn as we already know will lay out just about anyone. kaberle, is a good puck moving dman. komisarek is big, 6'4 240, and also has offensive skill. Beachemin, talented and a hugeeee shot. white is also pretty good aswell.
hands down leafs are better on the blue line. |

Depends what you consider better. Toronto's group is bigger and stronger and will definately toss the body around. Montreal's group is better puck moving and better offensively.
In the end, it will be nearly impossible to judge TO's group because their forward groups is pretty weak. On paper, they don't appear to have the offensive support to give the d-men a chance.
Personally, going into a Cup run, I take Montreal's group. More effective at moving the puck across all three defensive groupings is important. Montreal also has flexibility. TO appears to have a pretty clear 1-4, but if #1 goes down the replacement is not a legitimate #1. Montreal has some experience and talent across their d-group. |

Roman Hamrlik > Jeff Finger
Paul Mara > Mike Van Ryn
Hal Gill < Mike Komisarek
Josh Gorges < Luke Schenn
Ryan O'Byrne < Garnet Exelby
