I recently watched a old Oilers game. Edmonton was playing Philly when Gretzky scored 5 goals to get 50 in 39. I counted through the first 2 periods. There were, at the least, 60+ plays that would have been penalties today.

I watched on point where Kevin Lowe took a Philly player down in the corner. He literally layed on him for 38 seconds. The play went from the Oilers end to the Philly, end, 2 shots were taken in the Philly end, and the play came all the way back to the Edmonton end before Lowe let the Philly player up.

Completely joke.

I like the NHL today. Skills players can show their skill and defense required more than physically leaning on another player.

As long as the calls are the same for both sides, the new way of calling penalties is a-ok.

I think the refs make the correct calls about 75-80 percent of the time, BASED ON THE RULES, of today's NHL. The players are the ones who are their worst enemies when to comes to these penalties. The old adages applicable to hockey from years past, keep your feet moving, take the clean hit if it's there, keep your stick down, keep your head up, etc etc, still apply.

Do I miss the days of having to watch a Derian Hatcher lay all over a player and mug him, due to his inablility to keep up? No.
Do I miss watching a skill player have to fight through hooks, grabs and slashes to make a beautiful play ? No.

Do I miss watching a forward be abused with spears, crosschecks and slashes while trying to establish position in front of the net? No.

I think the league is(hopefully), still fine-tuning the game, there are plays where a forward can park himself in front of the net with little recourse from the defenceman, due to the current rules as they are, that take away from the physical beauty that is part of the game.

I think the propensity for the big hit that seems to be happening all too frequently, is a direct reflection on players false comfortability with the new rules and their false sense of freedom because of them. Players aren't respectful of playing in traffic anymore because they feel that slash or grab most likely won't be there, and are getting caught dangling with their heads down.

I don't think it's the refs....as much as the players figuring out the 'new' game.

Positive: The best part of the new nhl is that skill teams like the washington capitals and detroit red wings succeed because hooking and clutching and grabbing are no longer tolerated

Negative Even-up calls and occasional inconsistencies undermine the game...

the refs seem to want to make the penalty situation to even up by the end of the game, which has abearing on how the game is played.

It's not that there's too many calls, but the calls are inconsistant. The league is using the refs to influence the direction of the game, all so they can sell moe sidney crosby and ovechkin hats. Its become business, and thus the integrity of the game was lost.
