Posted - 10/23/2009 : 09:49:49 Now that Dustin Penner is looking like the player he had the potential to be, if he keeps this up A. do the Oilers have a shot at a playoff spot and even a second round appearence and has Penner's contract become a bargin? i believe he is at 4 million or so for a 80 point player thats cheap

Posted - 11/21/2009 : 19:45:50 I would have to agree with Josh's statement.
It is going to take more than just a well-playing Penner for the Oil to make the playoffs, let alone a second round playoff birth.
The Oil have added a few solid additions this year, this combined with players like Penner and Hemsky, Cogliano, etc, playing to their full potential... we could see the Oil make the playoffs. But I still do not see them going past the first round. Not this season.

Posted - 11/13/2009 : 00:35:41 Pasty, yes IMO, the Oilers definitely have a shot at the playoffs if Penner continues this breakthrough season. As for his bargain status contract wise, i'd have to say if he ends up keeping this pace, yes, he's somewhat of a bargain. However, that's for one year. He's been getting paid good money for the past two seasons as part of this contract and barely put up 80 in the two combined. So yeah, any 80 pt guy in that range is great, but over the whole contract, i'm not so sure? Also, that's assuming he keeps up the pace he's on, not just this year, but next??
I agree with the poster who said he'd finish in the 60's somewhere, maybe low 70's even? Then again, that's just a guess? Personally, i hope he tops 50 goals and 100 points for the next 5 years. Maybe then, Burke will finally shut up about the signing being so bad!!! |

Posted - 11/12/2009 : 19:15:10 New coach new attitude in the dressing room all that needs left to do is strip the C from Moreau give it to Souray trade for a shutdown defencement and the team will be set to make the playoffs finally, Penner has outplayed every Oiler this year yes even Hemsky everytime this guy is on the ice he a force to be reckon with I never knew the guy had dangles till this year. Heres to the Oilers making the playoffs if there defence can hold up |

Posted - 11/12/2009 : 17:09:05 It's nice to see Penner playing to his potential. He could be a very dominant player if he uses his big frame to his advantage. If he plays an aggressive game no one will want to mess around with him. Perhaps the movement to Edmonton shell shocked him? And now he's finally getting used to it. Or maybe just finding chemistry with his new linemates? Whatever it is, it's nice to see him playing to his potential!

Posted - 10/24/2009 : 07:44:27 i have to say...i was not a fan of the oil last year, but this year i think their growing on me. Adding players like O'sullivan, Khabibulin, Comrie and Visnovsky and the way guys like Gagner, Penner, and Brule are playing its nice to see. I think it boiles down to can the Oilers defence stay healthy? Souray and Staios, both injured now. And what's up with Horcoff? he is invisible out there! 2pts in 9 games. The Oilers have a good shot at the playoffs maybe 7th or 8th.

In fairness, thats probably all he was destined for, the offer sheet placed an unfair amount of expectations on Penner. Hopefully I'm wrong, though, the Oil certainly could use a few breaks their way.
Penner was averaging close to a point per game with Brule and Moreau, so yes losing Hemsky would hurt him but he can still produce. While 80 points seems very high, if he keeps up his good play, the high 60's isnt that hard to imagine.

Posted - 10/23/2009 : 11:07:15 I dont think the Oilers Playoff hopes lay at Penners feet, but I am impressed with his play of late and of his linemates. I started a Post in the Oilers section just before you posted this. |
