With teams in the NHL seemingly giving the "C" (Captainship), to younger & younger players these days, it proposes a question.

Should teams be freely handing out the "C" to players at such a young age? For instance, Crosby & Toews. Yes, Crosby has helped lead his team to a Cup, but he dawned the C well prior to winning to it.

I'm just curious what others think of this. I always thought of the "C" going to PROVEN leaders of a fair amount years. 5+? atleast.

i think that is a very good question, my only responce is...you will never really know until your in the dressing room with these guys. Its behind the locker room doors where these decisions are made, and until you witness who is the vocal points on the team then all you have to go on is their play and emotions on the ice. A guy like Sid...comes across as a fire plug and will do whatever it takes to win and filters that throughout the room.
In the old days it seemed that the best player automatically wore the "C" , now a days it goes to the LEADER! or most experienced.

Young C's are nothing new, Yzerman got his captaincy at age 21 and he's probably one of the best captains ever to don the C. Then there are the young C's who don't work out, like Vinny in 2000 (age 19). If a team picks someone to be their captain its generally for a good reason.

Definately experience is a huge bonus which is why most captains do have some mileage on them. But I don't think many of the young guys recently picked can be falted. I assume you're talking about guys like Crosby, Richards, Brown, and Toews as the young guys. Richards and Brown seem to be born leaders, time will tell with Toews. Crosby was an exceptional case (age 19), but he proved it was not undeserved. I think every other captain has at least 6 years in the league or is 26+

Well, I think that a team has the right to choose who their captain should be. Personally, I wouldn't want one of my young players wearing the C. They clearly don't provide as much leadership and some of the veterans and they're still learning. That being said though, if a coach or GM wants a sophomore as captain, it's their decision.
