You're the new Penguins General Manager. You have to decide TODAY who you keep to continue as the base of your team. Who do you pick and why?

Chicago would have to give up a whole lot and I don't think it would be a value to them.

For Pitt to give Crosby or Malkin to Chicago, it would involved

Keith or Seabrook
Sharp or Versteeg
a player like Byfuglin or Kjarmlsson
2-1st round draft picks
at least 2 other draft picks.

The problem is that most of those players are UFA's at the end of this season anyway. So why would Pitt chase players they can pick up in the off season anyway??

I just posted about trading both of them which I wouldn't do.
I would trade Malkin, I think Chicago would have some interest aside from the salary cap issues. They have a ton of wingers and defensemen that would be appealing to Pittsburgh. Chicago needs another center.

Thoughts?

I think I would have to keep Crosby. Not that I would do it but imagine the depth and picks you would get if you traded them both to 2 seperate teams. As good as Stall is it would leave you without a bona fide superstar.
each player would have to get at least 2 or 3 1st round picks plus 2- 3 prospects or players. The Pens would be set for a long time.

I'd also take Crosby.

For me, it's close . . . Crosby is more injury prone from what we've seen so far, he doesn't have quite the size that Malkin has, and he probably doesn't score as many goals (although he is looking great tonight). But, the leadership wins me over, as if I am building a team, that is very important, and as a true competitor, he really has the brass balls to compete every night. Some may find the kid whiny at times, but when the going gets tough, he definitely gets going, and he's proved it in spades already. He impressed the hell out of me in that game against Ovechkin when he matched him with a hattrick in a losing cause . . . he really does compete very, very hard every night.

Nothing against Malkin, he's a steady player, and he is coming out of his shell a bit lately as a quiet jokester in the locker room. But he is spotty on the hard core competitive streak, whereas Crosby is just one of those guys that doesn't take a day off (like OV).

Canucks would win that deal hands down. Would never happen for both teams though, too much on the line.

I'd not do that trade in a million years, personally. You are adding on far too much salary taking the Sedins and Luongo, not to mention I find Fleury and Luongo around equals, in my opinion.

Crosby + Kunitz + Guerin for Sedins + Kesler? No way in hell. :)

I dunno, but as a Canuck fan, i think we'd win this trade. I agree, both would be doing well, but with Fleury's emergence as a top tier goalie, i think the Canucks would do this deal?

Gotta give you credit, it's an intriguing deal. Guess you'd have to look at salaries too though?

I picked Crosby. Not because of stats or leadership. Because with Russian players you always have that stigma that they could leave at anytime and play in mother Russia without compensation. Malkin does not have any of the normal Russian characteristics of taking a game off or selfishness, but he is young and could still inherit them.

You take Crosby, otherwise CBC and TSN would lose all intrest in you.

Good points, I'm sure for many of the reasons listed Crosby would fetch more on the open market. So as GM, my team with Malkin + a better trade return would leave me ultimately with the better team, since Crosby and Malkin are so close anyways.

Couple of things.

1 - Crosby or Malkin could get a top 5 goalie and draft picks but why would the Pens want a goalie?? MAF is a top 5 goalie already(or emerging to be) and he's only just 25 next month!!

2 - I like Crosby's leadership huge, but these Malkin guys have me thinking too. What if you could deal Crosby for 2-top 6 forwards/2-top 3 defensemen or a combination of , 2-1st rounds draft picks, with one of those players being a leader??? That might make the trade worth while.

Ultimately, I think I throw both names around the league and see what other GM's offer. If I can get a better deal for Crosby, I move him. If the better deal is Malkin, I move him.

You can't lose with either player.

That being said, if the exact same deal is available for either player, I keep Crosby.

I would keep Crosby for the same reasons that were listed.

And I would also add that financially, this is what it's all about when it comes to owner, Crosby is a more franchise player and brings a lot of money to the organisation. So much market is put around Crosby.

And also I believe Crosby is a better all around player and a great leader. He is the face of the club, and it should stay that way for years to come.

Gonna go against the grain here and pick Malkin...

Statistically its fairly close, but I think Malkin is ultimately a bit harder to get off the puck, more physically intimidating and has more of a scoring touch than Sid. Obviously both are great players, but only one has the Conn Smythe. Last year Malkin was the better player in 3 of the 4 series (in the Washington series Crosby was better) that Pittsburgh won. Ever since Crosby was hurt and Malkin emerged as an elite NHL force, he has been the better player. And yes, if you dealt Crosby or Malkin I couldn't imagine what they would be worth in the open market. A top-5 goalie and four first rounders? probably.
Matt_Roberts85 Posted - 10/26/2009 : 13:23:59
Wow, what a trade that would be. Blockbuster

Id also take Crosby, for the reasons mentioned above. Though I would have to sleep on it if I could...

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E".
Beans15 Posted - 10/25/2009 : 16:07:57
I do everything in my power to keep both. I truly believe these guys are the Lemieux/Jagr or Gretzky/Kurri of today. Both Crosby and Malkin are brialliant hockey player, but both are better and more successful together.

However, if I HAVE to pick one, I pick Crosby without much thought. The Leadership thing is definately the dealmaker. Above that, I have never watched Crosby take a night off. Never. Malkin mailed in the series against Detroit 2 years past.

Beside, I have Staal sitting there with the ability to take my 2nd line centre minutes and one of, if not the best goalie in the league still under 25!

If Kessel can get 2-1st rounders and a 2nd, I could get 2-3 roster players and 2-3 1st and 2nd round draft picks for Malkin.

Instant retool of my roster.

Easy one for me...Crosby

Better leader, better all-around player, better work ethic, better respresentative for the team, more heart, more tenacity....

No disrespect to Malkin, but to build a team around for now and the future? Definately Crosby.

Now I await the man-crush comments from guest posters

You have two highly talented Centers playing on your team. Both players make $8.7 million per season and are offensive forces in the game.

You now have a decision to make, Crosby or Malkin? Who stays, who goes?

Crosby & Malkin both bring dynamic, yet different aspects to the Penguins. But if you had to decide THIS DAY, who is your base to continue on the success?

It was a very, very tough decision for me personally. But in the end, I chose Sidney Crosby. I rate these two players almost dead even in overall performance, with each leading in different aspects. But the only real deciding factor for me is the leadership of Crosby. I find both very equal in all other areas, but Crosby ahead by a fair margin in this catagory.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
POLL NOTE: I am not asking "Who is better, Crosby or Malkin?" I want to know, if down to the wire, of these two, who does your franchise keep and why? (Skill, leadership, born talents, combination of all? Whatever makes you decide.)
