I'm sure you guys remember the famous LOD line. Eric Lindros, John LeClair, Mikael Renberg. Now that they are all gone ...who is the new Legion of Doom?

. . . and on top of the points made by the last few posters, one must remember the most important thing about the Legion of Doom: it had one of the best players in the game at the time, Lindros.

So, to make a comparable line these days, it would have to have one of Ovechkin, Malkin or Crosby, I think - and only Ovechkin fits the profile of a hard-nosed physical player willing to dominate physically as well. And LeClaire was no slouch, and Renberg had his best years with these guys.

In 94/95, in a strike-shortened season, Lindros, Renberg and Leclair finished 2nd, 8th and 9th in scoring respectively.

In 95/96, Lindros was 5th in the scoring race and LeClair put up another 50 goals, while Renberg had a reduced number of games due to injury.

What must be remembered, however, is that by 95/96, they were not THE top line in hockey . . . there were these guys called Lemieux, Francis and Jagr on another Pennsylvania franchise at the time that finished top 4 in scoring that year.

Greatness is fleeting.

Very good points, both you and umteman. The youngsters prob don't realize just what kind of size that line dominated with! I also agree that the speed and agility are bigger factors today. That's part of why i think the Getzlaf line, albeit a little smaller than the LOD, would be comparable as far as stats and production go....

I don't think the legion of doom line would have as much success today. Speed and agility are bigger factors than physical play, at least for the first line goal scorers.

Did you hear about the retired proctologist? He spent 40 years saying "what's a place like this doing in a girl like you?"

I think the one line you could compare with skill set and size would be the Getzlaf/Perry/Ryan line.

Getzlaf 6'4", 220 lbs
Perry 6' 3", 206 lbs
Ryan 6'2", 208 lbs

Stats taken from NHL.com

Still smaller than the original LOD line, but very skilled and with some size. Ryan is prob still filling out too as he's still pretty young.....

The closest is Thorton, Heater and Clowe based on size and skill but they don't really play physically enough.

Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan has a chance, but so far only Getz has the skill, but they do have the size.

The last incarnation of something similar to the Legion of Doom was Thornton, Murray and Knubble back in the Boston days. What a massive line, with skill, grit and finish (but it lacked another quality that LOD had - speed). Knubble and Murray were beasts though not as fast as Leclaire and Renberg but just about as gritty and skilled. Thornton, well is Thornton and in no way plays a similar game to a young Lindros.

I like it! contact the GM of Washington and tell him he needs to lose Semin and pick up Getzlaf!

No other Legion of Doom line here . . . because, part of the LOD line's awesomeness was the fact that the line could dominate physically as well.

Lindros, at 6'5" 240lbs, LeClair 6'3" 225lbs, Renberg 6'2" 220lbs
All of them played physical, hard-nosed hockey, and the skill and talent of Lindros and LeClair made them one of the highest scoring lines of their time.

Maybe if Washington acquired a big, very talented center who liked to throw his body around . . . say, Ryan Getzlaf. Have him and Alex Ovechkin on the top line with say another big boy, Mike Knuble. If they could mesh well, that'd be a new Legion of Doom line, I guess . . .

. . . actually, scratch that. If that line was cooking - and there's no reason why they wouldn't rock - looking at the first letter of each of their first names, the RAM line might be pretty catchy.

Not sure you can replicate the Legion of Doom, but I think the line would need scoring an power and be able to strike fear into the opposition in multiple ways. A line of Hartnell Richards and Giroux is kind of similar... not sure if Giroux would be the Renberg though. Getzlaf, Perry and Lupul/Ryan could be another
