I'm in a hockey pool where a goal and an assist count for 1 point. I have to drop either Bryan Little or Dion Phaneuf but they both hae 22 points on the year. Just wondering who you guys would keep and who you would drop. Thanks |

Beans mentions the departure of Kovalchuk as Little "moving up the ladder", but he was playing RW to Kovie's LW last year, has fallen down the ladder a bit now, so hard to say what effect it has since it doesn't really move him up the ladder - just the LWers. At the same time, Phaneuf has left a "defence first" team and has something to prove, and he will also get more ice-time on the first or second pairing.
But the key here is that Little is a former top line guy who just happens to be having a terrible year, and could still move up to the top line playing with Antropov and now probably Evander Kane. The change of RW either way might freshen things up a bit, or the Thrashers offence could dry up, hard to tell.
I'd lean towards Little for sure in this case, actually. #1 - he's a former top line forward with offensive skill, versus a defenceman (albeit an offensive one) #2 - he has greatly underperformed this year, this is a guy who got 31g, 20 assists last year (albeit with Kovalchuk), whereas Phaneuf is still second fiddle offensively to Kaberle, and I think he was brought on for other reasons - checking, physical play.
Bryan Little would be my pick.

id drop little, no reason to think he will pick it up...kaberle should boost phaneufs powerplay stats if he stays a leaf. i think kaberle is going in a major deal to boost torontos offense. seems phaneuf is practising a lot with f.beau...maybe a peek preview for leaf brass of life without kaberle |

Gotta drop Little. If they move Kovalchuk the offence in Atlanta falls off dramatically. No one has to double team Kovy anymore. With how depleted the scoring is in Toronto, whether we Leaf fans like it or not Phaneuf is going to have to carry some of the offensive load. This may be a wild prediction but I could see him score 15 pts in the reamining 25 games if ice time in his debut is any indication.
Or, with Kovalchuk leaving move Little up the ladder in playing time and improve the quality of his line mates??
I'm glad I don't have to make this call and I really couldn't give either as head and shoulders above the other.
Hindsight will be 20/20 on this one as it normally is. |

No one. But man has Afinogenov ever picked it up, good to see considering he was a bust in Buffalo all these years. |

I agree. Phanuef has more potential to pick it up even if he wasn't traded. I have Little in my pool (no trades, guh) and he's been a 12:00 ice time bum all year, hanging out on the third line.

drop little, the change of scenery could cause a bump in Phaneufs stats, at least for the short them. Little has be a major let down this year. |
