Posted - 02/05/2010 : 09:22:41 Anyone from out of town planning on coming to Vancouver for the Olympics? Not just hockey, but do any of you out of towners have plans to attend any of it? The more i research it, the more i realize just how crazy it's gonna be here. Even if you don't have tickets, there's a ton of free stuff going on around town where there's big screens, beer gardens, etc. Should be a really fun couple weeks? I know it's not easy as far as accomodations and such so i can understand the difficulties! How things have changed, a friend of mine went to the Calgary games and said it wasn't nearly as diffiuclt to get tickets and/or accomodations. Hockey's the biggest change though, back then, he was getting tix for free. Of course, there were no NHLer's involved in '88! BIG difference.
It's costing me, but i've bucked up to attend a Can game, albeit against the Swiss. I just figure i had to see at least one game with Canada (also going to the Russia/Czech game and the Fin/Swe game). |

Posted - 02/15/2010 : 20:13:58 I just finished picking my Olympic pool, it was tough, could pick any 15 players. Took 4 each from Russia & Sweden, 3 Canadians, and then 2 Americans, a Fin, & a Slovak.
I found picking the Canadians the hardest. While i think we have one of the strongest teams & should make it to at least the bronze medal game, unlike some other teams that will rely on their top 6 forwards for the bulk of their offense, i think ours will come from all 4 lines. That said, i still went with 3 Canadians...Sidney Crosby, Eric Staal (he BETTER be on Sid's wing like forecasted), and Joe Thornton. No way i could go against my country, so i had to pick Canada for Gold, went with Sweden for Silver, Russia for Bronze. |

Posted - 02/07/2010 : 20:15:41 Well that makes sense. I think a couple of the quote may have been taken out of context but it makes sense that Vancouver Airport will have ITS busiest day, but definately not the busiest day ever.
Not to get anyone too upset for not talking hockey, but I would suspect the busiest day in the history of air travel was the first day after 9/11 when airports reopened.
That being said, it's days until we get to see if the Olympic Men's hockey tourney lives up to it's hype.

A couple of quotes taken from the article...
"On March 1, 2010, Vancouver International Airport will have the busiest day in its history, when 39,000 passengers and 77,000 peices of luggage depart after the Olympic closing ceremonies."
"During the Olympics, YVR is expecting an extra 231,000 passengers, including 6,850 athletes." |

Again, on average, the Atlana airport is the busiest in the world. They handle 90 million travellers a year, meaning 365 days a year they average 250,000 travellers.
That's average.

Posted - 02/06/2010 : 00:03:53 I agree with Beans, unless you're talking about numbers compared to the specific airports avg? I've been to O'hare in Chicago and Heathrow as well. Just the size alone of those makes it obvious they've prob had more passengers through on and avg busy day than YVR would see at ANY peak. If you're comparing the avg for them compared to what YVR might see, then maybe? EIther way, i'm sure i'll be crazy!
The thing with all these events is, they're held over a period of time and therefore some stay longer and some leave early? I guess with the number of athletes leaving in the days following the closing ceremonies, it'll be crazy but there def are bigger events held around the world?
Wonder what Indy's like during the 500? It's called the biggest single day sporting event in the world! Not sure how many fly and really you're only talking about a few hundred thousand (attendence) but it's prob their airports "nightmare weekend"? |

My friends brother works border patrol at the Vancouver airport, they are dreading this, apparently the day of the closing ceremonys is expected to be the busiest day in airport history, not just the Vancouver airport, anywhere in the world.

With all due respect, I call bull on this. The Winter Olympics is not even close to the most popular sporting event let alone any other event. I would suspect that the travel in and out for the Summer Olympics, World Track and Field Championships, World Cup, and Euro make the Winter Games look small.
I would agree that the Vancouver Airport will be extremely busy, but I doubt it will even be what places like Heathrow, ATL, Chicago, etc handle in a normal day.
Vancouver would have to pass 5 times their normal passengers through that day just to match what the airport in Atlanta does in a normal day. It's just not reasonable or possible. |

Alex what kinda free events are going on? Is there a web site or something you could put up. I really don't know Van too well and am looking for things to do while there.
Lyall, that bronze game should be great either way. Be nice to see a surprise team there such as Slovakia? ANY medal to a country like that is absolutely huge and would make that game even better! You just can't tell who's gonna be in it though. The quarter is similar. Depending on just where everyone finishes the round robin, it could be any teams really! Maybe you'll luck out and it'll be Canada?
There's a site called LiveCity Vancouver which i heard is listing a bunch of stuff that requires tickets and stuff that's free? http://www.livecityvancouver.ca/en/home.aspx There's at least two and maybe more sites with a huge one at David Lam park in the trendy Yaletown area which is only a 10 min walk from BC Place and GM Place. It's also got a skytrain station close so depending where you're staying, that's handy too.
If i find out any other sites (you can prob google a bunch of stuff like "free olympic sites or concerts"?) i'll let you know. Also, def be hitting the downtown area a few times before your arrival so i can scout out what's going on and let you know in the next couple weeks before your arrival! |

Posted - 02/05/2010 : 09:56:04 CM, curling is a huge event, should be good either way! I lucked out with a couple of the hockey games as i have a buddy who's been buy/selling a ton of tickets and gave me some at / near cost. The Swiss / Canada game is costing me a little more ($300) but it was that or the Norway game (both are selling for $500+ per ticket on most sites) and i figured with the Swiss beating us last time around in Turin, it should be the better of the two games!
I'm also going to a short track speed skating medal event that i'm pretty psyched about. I mean, i think it's a cool sport to watch, but i'm not sure i'd ever focus 4-6 years of my life into a sport where you could be half a lap from a gold medal and have some other dude accidentally wipe you out! Imagine all that training down the tube???
Have tickets to the woman's moguls event as well but not sure i can make it to that one (schedule conflict).
There are still some tickets on the Vanoc site available but mostly either single seats or things like prelim curling (where Canada isn't even playing). Also a bunch of tix for victory ceremonies / concerts with only Nelly Furtado having sold out i believe? Again, some are only singles, but some do have pairs and more? Bugs me a little that they're selling tickets to these victory ceremonies and the fact that their doing it indoors (BC Place). I think they should have built an outdoor venue that could hold 5,000 or so and it should be free! |
