Posted - 05/25/2007 : 17:50:42 The Oilers don't even need Smyth anymore, but regardless he will also be Captain Canada and it will always be the Oilers fault he left. That being said, the Oilers are preparing for a blockbuster deal of epic proportions. They have 3 first-round picks in this year's draft and I think a bunch of other picks. Needless to say, they can trade MANY of these picks to a team (say TB for Lecavalier) and still have loads to spend (upwards of 20 million) on free agents.
The Oilers will be a sick team next year, although I'm not too thrilled.

Posted - 03/12/2007 : 13:49:07 The Oilers will not get Smyth back unless Smyth will sign for less than $5 million. Why sign Smyth?? That would take you out of the running for players like the TB line or Jokinen. It has been cited many different times that TB can not keep Richards, Lecavalier, and St. Louis together and Jokinen also is not so heavy in the plans of Florida. Any of those guys are better than Smyth.
If Lowe signs Smyth in the offseason for more than $5 million/season, it will be another 10+ years before the Cup is in Edmonton again. |

Posted - 03/12/2007 : 13:29:26 Even though it was a really stupid trade, theyre definetely getting him back in the offseason. The Islanders are making a run, and they needed some depth. they wont sign him, cant afford it. PLus, Kevin Lowe wouldnt be that supid. He lead a team the the stanley cup finals. Hes gotta be at least half smart |

I think it would be incredible if the Oil had Bryan. Just think of it... the revived Battle of Alberta! Darryl vs Bryan! |

That would be a stroke of genius if they could somehow swing that.. but unfortunately thos 'fine boys from Viking' would not be happy with just a coaching job - they want more control. It was well rumoured that Bryan turned down several coaching positions last summer because he wanted them to include the GM position as well. He's currently pretty happy being the owner, president, General Manager, and Head coach of the Rebels.

Notice the +6 in 7 games. Who called him weak defensively? Who called him a 1-dimensional PP specialist? ....

Posted - 03/05/2007 : 17:31:19 Facts are Facts... More proof that Lowe blew this one. I'd be incredibly disappointed IF I were an Oilers fan at this point.. and even MORE disappointed in a few years when Berg hits his prime.

I'd love to have him on my team. |

Posted - 02/25/2007 : 00:03:20 Bergeron is physically weak - too weak to log above avg. ice-time. He's a one dimensional liability. His offense isn't near good enough to justify his liabilities. As Beans said he can't hit the net much from the point. Skates good but is not even an avg NHL defenceman. Skating is the ONLY reason he got this far.
If grebenshkov is playing well in Russia than I'd say Edmonton got the better end of the deal. Even at this point.
Obviously the Islander's are desperate for pp offense from the point - at a bargain bin price. Bergeron won't be in the NHL for much longer. |

Posted - 02/24/2007 : 10:19:55 My final point on this, as it is another where opinions will not be altered:
1) D-Men do mature later, but they should progress. Bergeron has been regressive defensively since he started here. He will be 27 this year. Looking for less than 5 minutes I found Malik, Regehr, Volchenkov, Bouuwmeester, Webber, Pitkanen, JM Liles, Bieksa, Phaneuf, R. Whitney that all have more points, more have a better +/-, and they are all the same age or younger that Bergeron. I'm sure I can find many more examples. I just wanted to prove a point.
2) He played a big part of last year with Pronger. That helped MAB out big time and this year, without him, he's a minus player.
3) Proven offense with proven defensive liability means what?? It's not like he's a Paul Coffey who gets 100 points a year but wasn't great defensively. He gets 40 points (maybe) a year and is barely a plus player.
4) The Oilers seem to be pretty good at knowing when to give up on a D-Man. Tom Poti?? Cory Cross? Eric Brewer??
I'm done with this statement:
MA Bergeron will never be more than a big, inaccurate shot and a fast skater. That does not make a good defenseman. Never will.

Posted - 02/23/2007 : 14:58:10 Dmen mature a lot later than forwards... It takes time. General rule of thumb is that 30-35 is their prime... Bergeron's still learning... got a few more years to keep learning..
He was a plus player in 75 games with Edmonton in 05/06 and is currently a plus player with the Islanders...
Plus he's proven he's got offense... Top 40 type of offense.
Sorry, really looks like Lowe got hosed...

Posted - 02/23/2007 : 14:07:13 It may appear for non-Edmonton fans that this is a bad deal. However, after watching him for the past two years giving away games with stupid, beyond rookie mistakes, its good riddance to bad rubbish.
The Oilers win based off of their needs. They need some cap room to move either at the deadline or this summer, and they need less weak defensemen. If the Islanders need a player with a huge shot, a fast skater, and a defenseman who is a defensive liability, then both teams win.
This is not a landslide in either direction. Both teams get what then want. As an Oiler fan, I got exactly what I wanted. That is why I say the Oilers won! Realistically, both teams won.

Posted - 02/21/2007 : 19:48:40 Marc-Andre Bergeron playes in the NHL and will for a while now that he is out of Edmonton, all other players will become non factors in the NHL, So Islanders win this one BIG time...

Posted - 02/21/2007 : 19:43:18 it all depends, i personally think bergeron is a decent defenseman, hopefully he'll work better with the isles than he did with the oilers, and as for that russian defenseman, I guess he has to be good or else this trade would've been pointless for the oilers, the question is whether or not he's ever played in north america and if not, how long it will take him to adjust. Could be another year or two before he starts to get really comortable.

Posted - 02/20/2007 : 17:13:18 Canucks Man, I don't think you see the point. He was really bad here and was not going to improve here. The Oilers goal was obviously to dump the contract. So they did exactly what they wanted to. And trust me, after painfully watching Bergeron for the past two years, he will fault the Islanders. 2 points in one games does not make him a good player. |

Posted - 02/20/2007 : 16:47:41 2 assits first game for the islanders for bergeron, if your talking about this season the isles won hands they get an actuall player for sure, the oilers dont even no if the russian guy is going to be in the NHL next year
CANUCKS RULE!! |

Posted - 02/20/2007 : 16:43:02 I strongly agree that Edmonton got the better deal. For every point that Bergeron gets, he gives up 1 or more through stupid turnovers in the defensive end. He was -9 in 55 games with 25 points this year. Even if he does good in NY, he would have not succeeded in Edmonton. I'm just happy we unloaded the $1.5 mill/year. |

Posted - 02/19/2007 : 13:17:32 Hmm... BUG! ;) I voted Islanders, but the poll still says 0 votes for 'em. ;)
It's not of the blockbuster variety, but I like this for the Isles. Bergeron is an above average offense defenseman (come on! the guys 35 (Top 45) points last year, and he currently has 25 (Top 40) so far this year, and Ibelieve he had over 100 in his last year in the Q)... and the guy is only 27 - Not even to his prime yet. He needs another 2-4 years to improve the defensive part of his game, and he will be a very well-rounded asset for the Islanders for the next decade.
To be honest, I dont know much about this 24 year old Russian Defender, but he seems to have bounced around a lot from team to team and from the show and the minors until he ended up back in Russia this year. Wit not even a good +/- I can't even say he could be a good stay-at-home prospect...
Islanders won this round.... |

And im not sure who got the better end cause we'll have to see how Grebsehkov plays and who the Islanders can get with the draft pick. |
