Name a team to fall back in case the inevitable happens.

I am truely hoping somebody can swat them along the way of course. Mytor, don't get so full of yourself, the Habs are anything but Canada's team. When The Leafs aren't in the playoffs in this country it hurts everyone connected to hockey across this Nation. Revenue streams, viewership and overall interest is down weather you like them or not. This is simply a fact. Some people also know the difference between the rest of this country and the province of Quebec. There is a difference, just in case you seaters haven't figured that out?
It's funny how you say that the habs are not canada's team yet you go on any hockey forum across the internet and the hab fans always out number any other nhl team's fans. Can you answer me why, i can HABS = CANADA'S TEAM. As for the the country hurts from the leafs not making the playoffs, like the other poster said ya hurts from laughing so hard. i hear that the goverment of canada is seriously considering making it a public holiday every time the leafs miss the playoffs for people can catch their breath from all the laughing and hooplaw. Leaf fans how does it feel to be scraping the bottom of the barrel for so many yrs.

Posted - 03/28/2008 : 12:48:17 Who honestly thinks the Habs are gonna win the Cup? Seriously. They have a rookie inexperienced goalie ( although Komisaurus data is interesting), an offense that can go cold against any team with a good defense and they have a solid defense.
Habs don't have the tools to win this year, and most Habs fans are to ignorant to realize that there team isn't cut out to win. Although I may be wrong.
If you want to cheer for a team to win this year, choose the Sharks. Since aquiring Brian Campbell, they have been unstoppable. They have the defense, offesnse and goaltending. And I would bet any money that Joe Thornton would come out of his playoffs slump better then Kovalev or Higgins can.

Posted - 03/28/2008 : 11:39:29 Antro. Come now my good man, I know you have undying loyalty to this so-called hockey team called the Leafs, but lets be rational about this....Sure the Leafs prevented the Habs from getting into the playoffs last year, but what does that tell you? The leafs were simply spoilers. They weren't the ones in the driver's seat. The Habs had it in their hands to make the playoffs and choked! I admit it. But that has been the mantra of leafs fans for decades now. "Oh, we prevented this team from going further into the playoffs. Oh, we prevented that team from getting into the playoffs."...That is all leafs fans ever say. With the exception of '93, in which case it's "Damn Carey Frasier!".....As you say that the Habs' record against the leafs this year isn't the greatest, but it is only 2-2-1...but a handful of games does not a playoff contender make, so even if the leafs had beaten the habs every game this year, it wouldn't matter. Cause they are still not in the playoffs and the Habs ARE! |

Posted - 03/28/2008 : 08:45:41 I read on a website...check it out...
afy writes "I normally write about my Leafs, but an interesting observation inspired me to write this story.
Back in September, Habsrock99 wrote an article comparing this year's Canadiens to the 1986 team. At the time, I thought "you're joking, right?". But in hindsight, the article was actually ahead of its time, written when most analysts picked the Habs to miss the playoffs.
Meanwhile, I did some research of past hockey eras and found out a very interesting fact about Montreal rookie goalies going back 65 years.
If history is any indication, this might have implications for Montreal's performance in the upcoming playoffs.
Over the years, the Canadiens have had a number of rookie goalies, most of which fall into 1 of 2 categories:
1. Rookie goalies who did not play for Montreal for very long
Gerry McNeil Roggie Vachon Tony Esposito Phil Myre Rick Wamsley Jocelyn Thibault
OR
2. Rookie goalies who were not top calibre or No. 1 guys (ie, not really all-star material)
Roy Worters Wilf Cude Bert Gardiner Claude Bourque Charlie Hodge Michel Plasse Michel Larocque Richard Sevigny Steve Penney Andre Racicot Frederic Chabot Mathieu Garon
Of course, Montreal has also had a slew of goaltenders who were simply not rookies. Examples include:
Gump Worsley Denis DeJordy Wayne Thomas Denis Herron Doug Soetaert Brian Hayward Rollie Melanson Ron Tugnutt Pat Jablonski Jeff Hackett Stephane Fiset David Aebischer Cristobal Huet
However, since World War II, Montreal has had FOUR prominent rookie goalies who went on to have great careers for the Canadiens. For this reason, these 4 goalies are unique.
And now, this year, Montreal has a 5th such goalie, Carey Price, who many believe will follow in the foot-steps of the other 4 legends.
So who are the 4 major goalies that went on to have stellar careers for the Canadiens? They are:
1. Bill Durnan
2. Jacques Plante
3. Ken Dryden
4. Patrick Roy
Want to know how Montreal fared in the playoffs with these goalies in their ROOKIE year? Check it out:
Bill Durnan (1943-44) -- Canadiens won Stanley Cup
Jacques Plante (1952-53) -- Canadiens won Stanley Cup
Ken Dryden (1970-71) -- Canadiens won Stanley Cup
Patrick Roy (1985-86) -- Canadiens won Stanley Cup
Carey Price (2007-08) -- TO BE DETERMINED
In other words, in the past 65 years, every time the Canadiens had a prominent rookie goalie, they went on to win a Stanley Cup title! That is absolutely incredible. I can't think of any other team who's had that kind of success with Rookie goalies.
Going back further, since World War I, there is only one major Montreal goalie who failed to win the Cup in his rookie year, Georges Hainsworth (1926-27). Instead, he won in his 4th year.
The legendary George Vezina was Montreal's rookie goalie in 1910 when the Habs didn't win the Cup, but that was before the NHL was born.
The really astute reader will notice that I excluded Tony Esposito from the list of prominent goalies, even though the Habs won the Cup when he was a rookie (1968-69). I omitted him because he didn't play in Montreal for long, as he was quickly traded to Chicago after his rookie season. if I included him, I would have to include various other goalies as well, including Roggie Vachon.
Some would argue that Jose Theodore bucked the trend, but consider that he didn't earn the No. 1 goaltending job until his 4th season with the Habs, and the above list only includes prominent rookie goalies who also went on to have stellar careers. Theodore doesn't really qualify as such.
So the question is, will Carey Price continue the tradition that started about 65 years ago? We shall see, but the historical data is remarkable.

But really Leafs fans. Is there even a rivalry between Montreal and TO anymore? The Laughs aren't even on the same level as the Habs. I would say that Ottawa and Montreal is more of a rivalry. It's like two older brothers playing and the third youngest one squeaking in the background trying to get noticed and wanting to play with them too, but the two older brothers just ignore him because they know that he's just a little kid and he would get injured if he played with the big boys! |

Ohh dear Mytor its kind of like you are asking to be bashed. "Bash me members bash me", is most likely whats running through your head.
Now, that you have bashed the Leafs on numerous occasions, its time for me to bash your beloved Habs. But, hold on one second there. First, I need some material and by that I am mean I want you in one post to say everything that is good about the [b]Present[b/] Habs. Say everything. Goaltending is really the only strong point of that franchise. And since I have never seen you make a case for why the habs are like a god to you on this site, this is your chance, please I am begging you.
