I am doing a hockey pool this year and I am not sure if some of my picks are smart choices. I would like to know who you would choose.

You must pick 1 person from each group. It is only about total points and not +/- and there are no goalies. If a player is injured they can not be replaced.

The groups are:

#1) H. Sedin VAN #2) Perry ANA #3) *Zetterberg DET*
*D.Sedin VAN* Malkin PIT Backstrom WAS
Crosby PIT *Stamkos TB* E. Staal CAR
Ovechkin WAS Iginla CGY Getzlaf ANA
St. Louis TB Parise NJ B. Richards NYR

#4) Toews CHI #5) Vanek BUF #6) *Ryan ANA*
Giroux PHI Eriksson DAL Sharp CHI
Kesler VAN *Kopitar LA* Tavares NYI
*Kane CHI* Thornton SJ Duchene COL
Datsyuk DET Marleau SJ Briere PHI

#7) Nash CLB #8) *Heatley MIN* #9) *Skinner CAR*
Carter CLB Kovalchuk NJ Lucic BOS
M. Richards LA Gaborik NYR Hossa CHI
*Kessel TOR* Spezza OTT Havlat SJ
Pavelski SJ Cammalleri MTL Koivu MIN

#10) Krejci BOS #11) Visnovsky ANA #12) *Doughty LA*
Lecavalier TB Green WAS Keith CHI
Plekanec MTL Lidstrom DET Weber NSH
*Grabovski TOR* *Yandle PHX* Letang PIT
Jagr PHI Byfuglien WIN JM Liles TOR

** are the players I picked for each group which are:

1) D. Sedin
2) Stamkos
3) Zetterberg
4) Kane
5) Kopitar
6) Ryan
7) Kessel
8) Heatley
9) Skinner
10) Grabovski
11) Yandle
12) Doughty

So what do you guys think? Who would you choose over someone I chose?

I'm not sure if Giroux would be my pick in group 4. I'm a big Girioux supporter, he's one of the best young players in the game & only going to get better. Pavel Datsyuk and Patrick Kane (if healthy for the start of the season, think i heard a while back he'll miss some of camp?) would both be excellent choices as well.

Can't say i'd take Zetterberg in group 3 either. All the guys listed are great players, but Ryan Getzlaf is the easy choice for me.

I agree with most of what you said slozo except for group 5. I don't think Thornton is the easy pick for that group. San Jose seems to be doing the same thing Washington did last year, focusing more on team defense. Because of this I think the whole offence will put up less points. Thornton's linemates also aren't as strong as last season. I expect LA to have a monster season and Kopitar should put up a lot of points. It's a toss-up and I don't think you could go wrong either way.
Guest I'm not sure what you were thinking in group 3 Zetterberg would be the last guy I would take from that group.

You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take Wayne Gretzky

1) not Crosby
You'll probably be ok with anyone else, although I'd go with Ovie for a big comeback year. I think the Sedins might have a slight SC hangover same as the rest of the Canucks, St.Louis has gotta start that downward slide anytime now, and Crosby just not worth the risk/reward.

2) Tough - toss up between Malkin, Perry, and Stamkos. I lean towards Perry here, only because of Malkin coming off his injury, and Stamkos looking too cold at the end of last year.

3) Backstrom, Staal or Getlaf, lean towards Getz.
Backstrom could be just as good though. Staal will mail in his 80 points.

4) Giroux.
Easy.

5) Thornton - just as easy!

6) Ryan, yes.

7) Richards or Kessel, lean towards Mike Richards.

8) Tough one between Gaborik, Spezza and Kovalchuk . . . I go with the less injury prone sure bet, Kovie.

9) Hossa or Koivu.

10) Tough one. I gamble on Jagr here, everyone gets 60 points, and he could get 80, although safe bet is Plekanec or Lecavalier.

11)Green - strong comeback season on a stacked team.
Def not "fatty" Buf this year.

12) Good with anyone except Liles (put there for sill Toronto fans I suppose). I'd lean towards the better offences, Doughty or Keith.

Those are my thoughts, take 'em or leave 'em.
