What a sad day for McCarty:

From TSN.ca

10/27/2006 4:27:16 PM

Calgary Flames winger Darren McCarty, who filed for bankruptcy in April, is having some of his most cherished possessions auctioned off next month by bankruptcy trustees.

C. B. Kaye & Associates will be conducting the auction on November 5th in Fraser, Michigan, on behalf of the trustees.

Among the items listed for auction were the three Stanley Cup rings McCarty won as a member of the Detroit Red Wings, two replica Staney Cup trophies and various jerseys, photos and other momentos of McCarty's career.

Other items include McCarty's Harley Davidson motorcycle, a Corvette, a Crownline motorboat, a Ski-Doo and nine televisions.

In documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Detroit last April, McCarty listed assets of $1.9 million US and debts of $6.2 million.

Well you have to feel a little bad but how can you lose so much money. Hopefully it all works our for the guy and he gets over the money losing problem.

Ok well maybe my Oxford dictionary is outdated but it did include the means of identifying with someone through similar concrete experience. I say we end this off-topic subject with we're both right and that you feel for him whereas I don't.

The people I do truly feel sorry for though are his kids.

Actually your definitiom is completely wrong and that might explain your ignorance on this topic.

"Empathy - The intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of another"

So let me break it down for you, it means to "imagine" or to "project" yourself into their situation without actually experiencing it.

Regardless, to get back on topic, it really is sad for McCarty to see his life's work be thrown aside for other bad life decisions. I feel for the guy and may even "sympathize" with him, but I'm careful not to go there because that may be Vocabulary 200 for you.

it is just another black eye for professional athletes

exactly, these guys make enough in a couple of seasons to set them selves up for life and we need to feel sorry for them if they are dumb enough to blow it all? i dont think so.

nice compassion. Empathy is not a word you guys must be familiar with. Addiction is the key word here.

Empathy must not be a word you're familiar with. Do you even know what it means? If I were to empathize with him it would mean that I would be in a similar situation as him and be able to understand his feelings by means of having had a similar experience. Now unless I'm a millionaire with a serious gambling addiction and am not aware, I will never be able to empathize with him (nor do I hope to ever be able to). Now if SYMpathy is the word you meant than no, absolutely not. Would you have sympathy for someone who was an alcoholic and neglected their children? Sure they're addicted but like Lyall said, it's all about your willpower. I will never sympathize with someone who has a problem, could fix it but chooses not to and makes others suffer whether it be physically, emotionally, financially etc.

Why would you empathize with a person who makes millions? If he is stupid enough to blow it's your own fault. I have dealt with addictions far worse than gambling. It's all a mental thing. If you truley wanna quit you can. I am wiyh Babla on this one. I would feel entitled to an apology.

I agree. Debts of $6.2 million??? I mean come on buddy, it's a complete waste of a professional athlete's salary. For all the Wings' fans that went to watch his games over the years, he should apologize (if he hasn't already). I know I wouldn't feel good spending $50-$100 to have a portion of that blown by someone else on a gambling addiction.
