Team captains
Note: This list includes Oiler captains from both the NHL and WHA.

Al Hamilton, 1972-76
Glen Sather, 1976-77
Paul Shmyr, 1977-79
Ron Chipperfield, 1979-80
Blair MacDonald, 1980-81
Lee Fogolin, 1981-83
Wayne Gretzky, 1983-88
Mark Messier, 1988-91
Kevin Lowe, 1991-92
Craig MacTavish, 1992-94
No captain, 1994-95 (Lockout)
Shayne Corson, 1995
Kelly Buchberger, 1995-99
Doug Weight, 1999-2001
Jason Smith, 2001-07

Who's next???

I say Ethan Moreau. A will go to Horcoff and Staios. Pisani and Stoll might get considerations as well.

This is unless the Oilers some how trade or RFA a great leader onto the team.

Pat Marleau would look good in Copper and Blue with a nice C on the front.

Fogolin was Captain to the end of the 1982 season, then Wayne took over as Captain. Lee still played for the Oilers until he was traded during the 1986-87 season...

I don't necessarily agree with everything I say.

And he will be captain until he is no longer an Oiler or retires. And I agree with the policy, I do think Ryan Smyth should have been given it in 2001 though :p

Wasn't Lee Fogolin captain before Gretz? I think he actually offered the captaincy to Wayne.
stastnysforever Posted - 07/05/2007 : 16:05:37
i think horcoff deserves it, hes been an oiler for a while and will be one of their leading scorers and I think he will be a great leader

what do Calgary and a tea bag have in common- they're both only good for one cup

Well, no Smyth, Smith, or Sykora anymore. Now I would have to say Ethan Moreau. No one else on the team deserves it better than he does now. Hopefully he can recover from his shoulder injury and be able to contribute to the team on the ice this season.

GO OIL!!! YA!!!
Beans15 Posted - 03/26/2007 : 16:39:19
Although I like Smith, there are many (and I mean many) other defensemen out there that could fill his spot very quickly. He's not the end all, be all.
Ddeathblade Posted - 03/26/2007 : 16:35:44
I think that Jason Smith deserves to be the captain. He is the core of our defence. His main role is,yes, to block shots, but how many has he blocked? He's what, 3rd? 4th in the league in blocked shots? He has excellent leadership qualities. Also, how does Smith take stupid penalties? He takes less than a penalty minute a game. He takes penalties to make crucial plays to prevent a goal. Without Smith, our defense is completely screwed. Ethan Moreau could give Smith a run for his money though.
Beans15 Posted - 03/11/2007 : 09:50:46
Jason Smith is the Oilers longest running captain. He was the leader of the team since 2001, 2 years longer than Gretzky and a year longer than Messier.

And why take the C off of him? I personally though when Smyth was here, he was the heart and soul of the team. But if anyone out there thinks that putting that C on someone else would make the team better is sorely mistaken.

Right now he is earning just under $2 million/year. Granted, he is not having his best year, but the Oiler have him as thier #1 d-man. He is not that. He played great last year when he was #3 or #4. He is a true shutdown defenseman and does a decent job of it. He just needs some help.

Jason Smith is a leader in the dressing room you don't need to be the best you just got to lead by example
PortugueseOilKings Posted - 01/17/2007 : 23:46:08
I dont agree with demoting Jason Smith as captain. Since when he was given the C I always knew it belonged to Ryan Smyth. But I agree with not taking it away until that player has either been traded or retired. Its respectful and it shows the organisation wont back down from their decision.

However, at this point I dont think I would mind seeing Jason Smith traded
lyall Posted - 01/16/2007 : 21:26:59
I agree. Smith takes many bad penilties & all the Oilers defence do is lay on the ice trying to block shots cause that's all he can teach them.
Guest8165 Posted - 01/16/2007 : 17:46:28
Jason Smith shoud be demoted! Whenever the Oilers get scored against...guess who is on the ice JASON SMITH! He is hurting the Oilers. I am not gonna lie, I don't think he is a bad player. The problem is that this season he has been s***ting the bed! (excuse my language) I beleive either Jaret Stoll or Ryan Smyth should be the Captain. Since smyth had returned, he has been on fire. And Stoll has had a fantastic year..he is leading the Oilers in points! Great job Stolly boy!
-oil-country- Posted - 12/30/2006 : 17:15:02
lol beans i forgot about him cause i haven't seen him play forever, he should be on that list
Beans15 Posted - 12/27/2006 : 13:51:00
I am surprised the Ethan Moreau did not make the list as choices. Sure he's injured right now, but talk about a guy that plays his guts out each and every shift. There's another guys that bleeds Copper and Blue!
-oil-country- Posted - 12/27/2006 : 10:09:39
Beans i agree and don't think switching would really help them but i was just wondering who you guys think should be the Oilers captain
Beans15 Posted - 12/27/2006 : 09:55:48
I don't believe the Oilers have ever changed thier Captain without that player leaving. I don't think that Gator is doing a bad job at all. I agree the Smyth would make a fine choice, but I don't think switching the captain would help the team at all.
lyall Posted - 12/26/2006 : 22:35:51
Smyth. Hands down.
-oil-country- Posted - 12/26/2006 : 18:49:02
I say Smyth he's the heart & soul of the Oilers, i hope he recovers from his injury soon
