During an interview yesterday (January 8th, 2009) Tomas Kaberle mentioned that if Brian Burke no longer wanted him on the club that he would have to consider waiving his no-trade clasue. While Burke has stated publicly that he will not approach any player with a NTC to waive it, it is fairly clear now that Tomas will probably be dealt around the trade deadline so that he could at least control where he is moved to. His NTC is void during the summer if (when) the leafs miss the playoffs. Burke can then deal him wherever he wants.

That being said, where do you think the best fit for Kaberle is, and what a potential return on him might be. Please, lets keep the suggestions realistic.

Did a little more thinking about Kaberle. I definetly could see Chicago doing a deal. A young prospect (they have alot of them) and 1st rounder. They are looking to rid themselves of Havlat and Khabibulin so they may end up a part of any deal. They are serious this year about a big run into the playoffs.
Another destination is Tampa. They also have some young prospects and could give a 1st round pick. The new ownership is in trouble and may also be looking to dump some big names. I know Lecavalier just signed a big contract but I read somewhere (I am trying to find it) that he wants out because the owners are making a joke of the franchise.

I can definetly see Kaberle going to Montreal. I just don't know what montreal would be willing to give up for him. Montreal could use another puck moving defensemen with Markov. It would turn their power-play to the way it was last year. But draft picks will definetly be going in Toronto's way.

lies about souray lies well they better be lies or i will never watch the oilers again unless its some amazing trade that sets them up for life

Doesn't this really show how far the leafs have to go still? Even their best player won't get them anything really great.... its going to take alot of moves and tweaks before this team is competitive again. I simply can't state enough how important the draft is. Trades simply aren't the answer to alot of teams problems anymore. The cap is f***ed, it's handcuffed teams to its own crap.

Kaberle for Staal is a big stretch I agree, but the word from Dreger is that the pens are going to be shopping him and that the reason they signed him long term is so that he becomes a more attractive asset because he wouldn't be a rental. If Staal goes somewhere, it's probably not the Leafs though...

And Beans, your probably right (as always) about Montreal as well. Even though they made the Grabovski trade, a flashier trade between them involving Kaberle isn't very likley either. Leaf fans would be forced to watch Kaberle burn them time and time again for the next few years, which would just be cruel...

I was about to comment on this when work came a knocking...I was going to say that there's no way Pitts is letting Staal go and that Columbus would be a very realistic team that could make this happen. I was beat to the punch on both accounts....Why must I be such a hard worker.

I am reading a lot about Columbus scouts going around the league, looking at a puck moving Dman and a forward. Antropov has been the guy rumoured that they are after but I would not be surprised to see them go after Kaberle. Not sure what the return would as I haven't looked that much into it.

PItt just resigned Staal to a 4 year/$16 million contract extension. The guy is going to be a quality hockey player for the next 10-12 years(if healthy). I can't see the Penguins making this trade. It just doesn't make sense. I think it would be too one sided towards Toronto in the long run. Pitt has shown(with the long term signing of Malkin, Crosby, and now Staal), that they want to build a team for the long run, not the short run. Even though they are missing Gonchar, I don't think Kaberle is their answer either. Definately not for the likes of Staal. Wishful thinking Leafs fans!

I also can't see a trade between Montreal and Toronto. Rarely in today's NHL do two teams in the same divison make deals involving players like Kaberle. You never want to have a chance to make a team in your division better.

Ultimately, I can see him going to a team like Edmonton, Los Angeles, Florida, kind middle to bottom place teams. Actually, Florida might be a good fit. Especially since Bouwmeester appears to not be interested in staying in the Sunshine State. I would think the deal would involve Bouwmeester, but maybe Vokoun?? Craig Anderson appears to have the confidence of the team making Vokoun expendable. He is one of top part of goalies in the league that would be a step up on Toskala. Also, this would free up Toskala who might then go to the likes of LA, who have been without a top 'tender for some years now. And LA has a ton of young players and will more than likely have a top 10 draft pick in this years draft as well.

Edmonton has been rumored to be shopping Souray around. As he has returned to form offensively and has picked up his defensive game, that might be appealing to some teams. If Souray does find a new home, Kaberle in Edmonton wouldn't be too much of a strech. Again, a team like LA with a farm team full of decent prospects and could also have a high draft pick. Although this might actually make sense, Burke and Lowe's on going feud would put a stop to this almost immediate. Granted, it's a long shot but I think more likely than seeing Staal in a Leafs Jersey and time soon.

But who really knows. It's all a guess. Another thing to remember is that most often around the trade deadline, players go for less than what they are worth. More often than not, a trade is more equitable early in the season or in the off-season compared to in an around the trade deadline. So, if a deal happens between mid-February and the trade deadline, don't expect a ton in return.

Definately the Jordan Staal for Kaberle trade is a good deal. Pittsburg has struggled this season without Sergei Gonchar and Kaberle would be a great fit. Staal has struggled as well this season and the leafs could really use his offence.

Right team but I think it will be a bigger trade than that.

I can see Kaberle being a great fit for Montreal. The question is, what do The Leafs get in return? Montreal's 1st pick would have to be a given, along with say...Chris Higgins and a solid prospect from the Hamilton Bulldogs or a 3rd round pick? Personally, as a die hard Leafs fan, I wouldn't really care if he went to Montreal. If it was Mats Sundin joining le bleu, blanc et rouge than its a different story.

The Jordan Staal situation is a little odd...
If the Pittsburgh Penguins want to trade him for cap reasons, and he is making 4 mil per now, why would they take on 4.5 mil in Kaberle? If the reason they are going to trade him is because he's stuck as a 3rd line centre behind Crosby and Malkin, than It would be a great trade for both teams.

habs fans and leafs fans are going to jump all over me right now,, but why not the habs obviously there is no way this would be a straight up trade,,,, the leafs would never deal him to the habs but we need a powerplay specialist why not?? their would have to be a three way setup but it could happen,,,,
