Most recently, Tomas Kaberle was stripped of his A status (assistant captain) by Ron Wilson, the Leafs coach. Currently, the Leafs have Phaneuf as captain, and Beauchemin and Komisarek as assistant captains.

Was it the right move?

Also comment below on whether you think this is a strong indication that Kaberle will indeed be moved soon (or is at least being shopped).

Good comments all around, and I think the general consensus is that Kaberle has been a pretty classy, if understated veteran presence in the dressing room, and that he has been mistreated both publicly and privately.

Can't say I disagree.

But as Gusteroni pointed out, we don't know what goes on in the dressing room, or what words are spoken behind closed doors . . . so who the heck knows? Either way, I voted for "why not during the summer", but in reality, if you are trading Kaberle, why take away the A at all? You keep his "veteran leadership" value HIGHER if you keep the A on him when traded . . . and it's an easy and painless thing to do to pass it on then to the next guy. And, it would have been classy to let him keep the A.

Which is why I am very suspicious of a backstory . . . because I can't see Burke letting Wilson do all that on his own without Burke's approval. But again, total speculation.

having read the article on TSN and having followed this story as most have for the better part of 2 years, i have one word that describes Kaberle... Class.

Kabby can come play for me any day of the week, weather he deserves the A or not weather Wilson is a d bag or not, it all comes down to the winner when all is said and done will be Tomas Kaberle, because no matter what happens Kabby will be a great example of how to carry yourself off the ice and lets face it he is a top offensive D man in the league no matter where he plays,, wait did i just describe i good leader??

I think it's very safe to say that everyone knows and agrees that Kabby isn't going to be a Leaf after this season. Burk says he won't ask him to waive, but, he is doing almost everything in his power to make Kabby waive it without asking. 2 - 3 yrs of trying to trade him, constantly saying he isn't and won't ask him to waive, but putting it in his back every opportunity he gets. What a doosh.

It should be pretty obvious now that the Leafs no longer see Kaberle in their long term plans - if it was not obvious before that is. When you strip the A from your longest serving player (if he's not the current longest serving Leaf, he must be close), you're sending a clear message.

I hope that Kaberle screws the Leafs right back - that he doesn't waive his NTC at the trade deadline, stays until the end of the season, and watches as Burke gets scraps for his signing rights. IMO the Leafs have treated him pretty poorly over the last few years.

I wonder if this is some kind of punishment for the media stuff during the summer from Kaberle's Dad??

At the end of the day, this means nothing to the team but I think this does say that Kaberle's days with TO are numbers. No later than July 1, 2011 is when Kaberle will no longer be a Leaf.

It will be even better for us Anti-Leafs when Burke still can pull the trigger on a deal that he thinks is value and Kaberle leaves to a contender and the Leaf Nation get absolutely nothing in return.

An even better picture would be Kaberle raise the Cup over his head with another teams jersey on in the very near future.

poor kaberle...
being treated worse than souray, even though he is 100 times the better man, better player and better leader
he's been so good with all this crap that wilson has been dealing him ever since day 1 - this is icing on the cake for wilson
i'm sure some of the players also feel that way - so i'm not so sure how many will now be willing to risk their bones for wilson and go in for a hard check?
is he trying to tell his players that ONLY the tough will receive accolades from him?
is this the message he wants to send to the players?
well it may not work anymore - these players today are not like years ago. they'll gladly play on for millions in their contracts and tell the coaches where to go - so bad move mr. wilson, your arrogance took over your better judgment once again.

Wether or not kaberle will traded i don`t know, i didn`t see the need to do this. Why insult this guy, like him or not he has treated the leafs with respect but this respect doesn`t seem to get returned. I don`t like anything that comes out of Ron Wilson`s mouth, he seems like an arrogant SOB.

I`m not a big kaberle fan, not big on soft players, ( especially D-men ) but kaberle deserves better. Seems like a move to further force him out, don`t know why he would want to stay there.

Cheers to that man!

Apparently Kaberle and Wilson ( <----- douchebag) don't get along very well.

You know what I say?

Fire his ass, he doesn't score the goals, Kaberle does.

I hate Ron Wilson, Fire him!

I know it's not a big deal, but Kaberle deserves the A, way over Komisarek or Beauchemin.

Even if he's not a leader in the dressing room he's the guy to look up to on the ice and he always sets a good example for the kids. Phaneuf is more the agressive captain, why not have a quiet, calm, skill assistant.

Just another nail in the coffin to force Kabby to cough up his list of preferred teams to be traded to.

Although I believe Kabby is one of the better players to have the A obviously Wilson does not. I'm not in the dressing room so I don't know if he is very vocal but he does seem quiet. Also this spells that the rumors could very well be true about the tension between player and coach.

Kabby might be shipped out of town very soon as there are a number of teams still looking to fill their defensive gaps. This trio of captains looks very Burkian now.

It all means very little, we all no that kaberle is being shopped all the time and that Burke would love nothing more than to jet this guy. But at the end of the day, as long as kaberle is in that dressing room he will be a leader A or not.

CANUCKS RULE!!!
