Posted - 11/09/2008 : 06:44:37 last night when the leafs played montreal van ryn was skating in for the icing call but kostopolos came in behind at full speed and slammed van ryns entire body into the boards. so now kostopolos was ejected from the game, and van ryn might be out for 3 months. for anyone who saw that leaf game last night give me your opinion.
also what scared the crap outta me last night was when kostitsyn tripped shenn full speed into the boards. honesly if shenn got hurt, one our the leafs best dman (if not the best) i would of personally drove down to the ACC and pretty much killed kostitsyn lol.

Posted - 11/10/2008 : 08:53:57 About the kostopolos hit, it was a dirty hit and should get a one or two game suspension, no more. He did not mean to injure him you could tell by the look on his face after the hit because he stoped playing and knew he was in the wrong. That having been said Van Ryns def took the hit wrong, every one knows u are supose to turn into the hit when u go into the corners, Don Cherry talks about that everytime one of these hits happen. Sucks that he got hurt, but def part of the game, 2 game suspension. Now to the Kostitsyn "trip" , Shenn was falling either way, im not even 100% convinced that Kostitsyns stick touched his skate, but if it did def not intentional! They were skating very fast and just going for the puck, leafs got the man advantge and thats all that should be said about that. And as for calling the habs the dirtiest team in the legue that night? You are crazy who ever said that. Its funny how all the leafs fan fail to mention the more dirty, and INTENTIONAL play of the game was done by a leaf. When Grabovski was but ending carey price in the gut... That is one of the dirtyiest things iv seen in the NHL and he is a total RAT for doing that! And that was completly intentional and i have no respect for Grabovski anymore! Not to mention the leafs running price a few times aswell haha whos the dirty team? haha |

Posted - 11/10/2008 : 07:09:07 as far as i'm concerned, players getting injured, like Van ryn, are partly to blame. when you walk across a street, do you walk with your head down and take for granted that the oncoming cars will stop because you are in their path? Or, do you walk with an eye on the oncoming cars just incase they won't slow down?
When you go to the boards to chase a loose puck keep an eye on what's behind you and protect yourself at all times, PERIOD! |

Posted - 11/10/2008 : 07:03:26 Nowadays, players have little respect amongst themselves. there are unwritten codes in the game. It's just like a player ducking a check near the boards. It puts the checker in a vulnerable position (he might topple over, head first into the boards). aka: that spineless Grabovski ducking when Koivu was gonna ram him.
Puckhandlers always turn their backs to the checkers when they are near the boards thinking that they won't be hit because of the "hit from behind" penalty. In the old days you rarely saw a puckhandler turn his back to a checker because he knew he'd wake up in the hospital (free hit those days, no penalty). They always went to the boards sideways so they could see the checker coming in.

As for the Kostitsyn play, that was a little dirty as well, but I dont think it was intentional. Would deserve 1 game maybe, but it won't happen.
how can you say it was dirty, then say it's not intentional? it's one or the other, MAKE UP YOUR MIND! |

Posted - 11/10/2008 : 06:42:44 yes, it was a slash. but did grabovski have to toss both gloves and his stick? i'll give him a 9,5 for that performance. what is he, a soccer player?

I think all hits like that deserve a 1-2 game suspension, the hit was clearly from behind, his hands were right on the #s, Van Ryn's lucky he didn't get injured even worse..not to say a broken nose and wrist aren't bad. It was a scary moment for me as well when Schenn went into the boards like that..couldnt tell at first that Kostitsyn tripped him up, but the replay exposed it pretty well. Another scary moment was when Grabovski got slashed in the wrist by Robert Lang.

Posted - 11/10/2008 : 04:57:03 kostopolos should get 15 games and it's hard to tell if kostitsin was trying to trip schenn or just going for the puck i think it was intentional |

Posted - 11/09/2008 : 19:04:23 you think a defence would no how to go into the boards by now when a guy is commin from behind him 1-2 suspension as well not meaning to and not like this guy is a dirty player |

Posted - 11/09/2008 : 18:19:26 I just looked at this hit about ten times, and I had seen it live yesterday. Van Ryn makes a mistake here that probably cost him most of the pain, he turned straight into the boards. If you look you can see him going sideways a little, then he turns straight to the boards... I don't know about you guys but in my minor hockey I was always told to go in at an angle, I understand you don't always have a choice but I think Van Ryn did in this situation. However, Kostopoulos should not have gone in at that speed knowing he in chasing that particular player from behind, and he didn't lay up, sure he was coasting in... after 4 or 5 good strides. He went full speed to hit a player he knew would be in a vulnerable position whether Van Ryn went in straight at the boards or not. I think the punishment should be between 5-10 games because it was a vicious, illegal hit, and I believe there was a touch of intent to injure (or as some people might call it change the pace of a game). It was a hockey play, that's about the only positive (it wasn't a player stomping on another after a whistle for example) so His actual punishment will probably be 2 games.
As for the Kostitsyn play, that was a little dirty as well, but I dont think it was intentional. Would deserve 1 game maybe, but it won't happen. |

Posted - 11/09/2008 : 09:25:59 Without a doubt he should be suspended.
I think the game as a whole had a lot of quetionable plays happen. The Leafs did not have anyone on the roster last night and most, to prevent the Habs from taking liberties.
But in the end the Buds won and the Habs looked horrible out there!!
Fletch should look into getting some muscle (Holweg) is not that player. There will be other teams out there that will come in and try the same thing knowing that the Leafs do not have the muscle to stop it. |

Posted - 11/09/2008 : 08:06:58 The hit reminded me of Randy Jones hit on Patrice Bergeron. This brings to mind the saying of if you see the players number then back off. Everyone is taught from the beginning to not hit anyone in the numbers (back). The debate will be that Kotsopoulos assumed VanRyn to turn. Well we all know what assuming does. The hit was also a high hit making VanRyns head make contact first. For this reason Kotsopoulos should get suspended even though he did not mean to injure him. its hard to say he didn't mean to injure when everyone knows what happens on those hits and watching it over and over, VanRyn never showed any signs he was going to turn. The debate has already started that VanRyn should have turned to face the hit. I say respect your fellow players and don't hit from behind period! |

Posted - 11/09/2008 : 08:03:53 I'd say a 5 game suspension - but my standards for these kind of hits are different than Colin Campbell's. I bet you he'll get one, maybe two games.
To agree with Leafsfan 94 for once, I was really steamed about Kostitsyn's (the blonde one, Andrei, I think) slew foot on Schenn. That was a dirty play, and in my mind, is a suspendable offence.
I was not impressed at all with Montreal - they played like the dirtiest team in the league last night, and should have gotten many more penalties (many on Grabovski, who clearly left a bad impression!). A badly called game for the refs, although at least they got the no-goal right . . .

Posted - 11/09/2008 : 07:18:22 It's obvious that kostopoulos did not intend to injure Van Ryn, he did espect Van Ryn to turn around. But he did intend to check him hard and Van Ryn never turned. A suspension should be given to kostopoulos do to the degree of impact. I would give him a one game or 2 game suspension.
