If you could protect just 5 guys to stay with The Leafs who would they be?
I would protect Luke Schenn, Mike Van Ryn, Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Nik Antropov. and say bye bye Toskala you sieve |

Protect players? should a rebuilding team protect anyone, I guess so but the reality is everyone is available for the right price. You certainly would want to "protect" some young players to build a core for the future but ultimately they can be had to.
I will answer the question though as if it was vital to protect them to rebuild for the future. A hypothetical protection list if you wish.

Tlusty
Grabovski
Pogge
Pogge is not quite ready but he could slow to develop just like he was in junior. So if I had to protect players today I would include him.
A bit of a silly question if you look at it realistically. |

Tough not picking a couple of other guys like Ponikarovsky, Van Ryn, and Hagman, but they're ultimately expendable I suppose.

yeah man Niklas Hagman is one of few Europeans not to wear a visor, he is tougher than you think.
I'd protect:

2.Tomas Kaberle
3.Mikhail Grabovski
4.Nikolai Kulemin
5.Vesa Toskala

First of all, there aren't 5 guys on the roster worth protecting.
I guess If I had a gun to my head and I had to pick 5 guys to build around, I would pick:
Luke Schenn
Nik Hagman
Mikhail Grabovski
Tomas Kaberle
Matt Stajan
Sentimental pick: Dommy Moore

Well there are lot better goalies than Toskala. Mike Smith, Steve Mason, I'd even play Curtis Joseph over Toskala anyday. Toskala is a weak weak goalie. and Why Van Ryn? because either than Schenn he is best defense on Toronto. Kaberle is only good for one thing that's his offensive play he sucks defensively. Kubina his salary is way too high and he's not that good, although he does have his good days but that's very rare. |
