Was the three game suspension Cam Janssen received for his hit on Tomas Kaberle fair?

That hit was so late.

A little contradictory, which is it?

I truly believe Janssen didn't mean to injure him in the head, so I don't think there was any blatant intent to injure but he didn't help his case by elbowing him in the head while Kaberle was in a dangerous spot near the boards.

Thank you for making MY point. I suspect you are suggesting that the whole point of a body check is to cause a turnover. Truth is, the whole point of a body check is intimidation. It is a checker's goal to make any opponent wary of having the puck. It is a checker's goal also to make you think of self preservation before the perfect pass. The reason you follow through on your checks is to make the other guy think, "Crap, if I don't get rid of this now, I'm going to be a smudge on the advertising on the boards."
That is why the "Broad Street Bullies" were so successful; no one wanted the puck when there was an orange jersey within 50 feet.
Think about it this way. If Kaberle was not injured - and I still maintain it's a shame he was - do you really think he's make the "perfect pass" the next time he saw a player bearing down on him? No way. THAT is the whole purpose of checking.
Janssen's intention was not to drive Kaberle head first into the boards. It was to intimidate.

PS. Rumour has it the NHL is adding a new penalty to the game next year: Automatic suspension for hitting a Maple Leaf.

The point of the suspension is that there was intent to injure on the play. Would he gotten suspended if he had hit his shoulder and not his head, no. Was it a late hit? A little, not much but still late. If you watch the video again, you can see Janssen's elbow go up to hit Kaberle in the head.

And to answer Oil Country's question, yes, Kaberle is injured . I heard he is out indefinatly of 1 to 2 weeks.(Sucks for me either way. Im going to the Leafs game on Saturday and i can't watch him play )

Long Live Leafs Nation!!

Agreed Bab's.

I just don't understand why the NHL cited the lateness of the hit.
bablaboushka Posted - 03/03/2007 : 17:11:52
Well like I said in the other thread, I wouldn't have suspended him for it being late because it wasn't. To me the suspension was earned because it was a dangerous elbow to the head while Kaberle was in a very dangerous spot on the ice. Of course Kaberle should have been paying a little more attention, I mean how can you not see a giant skating towards you, but that's no excuse for Janssen to hit him the WAY he did, not WHEN he did.
Beans15 Posted - 03/03/2007 : 16:36:21
I have to say I think the suspension was a little much. If Kaberle was watching anything but his pass it would not have happened. Also, if the rule is 3 seconds or three strides, it was not late. It's another one of those keep your head up hits. Unfortunate injury, but not late. I have to disagree. Even watching the clock on the video, it was less than 2 second from the puck leaving Kaberle's stick to when the hit happened.

Although, to me it looks like he could have pulled up. He appeared to go at his head. If that is the case of the suspension, I will agree. But late hit, no way.

I think it's fair. It's not like he knocked him unconscious. 3 games is reasonable.
leafsfan_101 Posted - 03/03/2007 : 16:21:52
Reasonable enough, but losing Kaberle hurts us, for sure.

Long Live Leafs Nation!!

It was exactly what I would have given.

3 games for a cheap shot, it should be more for sure.
