Which retired NHL player with no Stanley Cup ring on his finger do you feel sorry for the most?

I was very happy to see him on the list and voted Hawerchuk.
This guy carried teams on his back and was simply a phenominal
hockey player. Get gets credit, but not as much as he deserves.
His stats are incredible and one could imagine what they would be
if he had played for good teams in his career.

Dionne. No Question.

For me, it's easily Dionne.
Sure he was a bit of a whiner, but very few were more talented! And the only reason he was whining was because his team wasn't winning.
After all, he's something like 4th in goals, and 5th in points... ALL TIME, but he never made it past the second round of the playoffs.
He mostly played on poor or, at best, average teams, (Det, LA, NYR) but put up eight 100+ point seasons, and added another four 90+ point seasons. Other than his twilights years with the woeful Rangers did he not average a point per game.
Yet his teams never made it to the Finals. He never knew the ultimate glory of the game, and with numbers like that, I think he deserved to drink from Lord Stanley's Cup.
Great question and great choices andyhack!

Andy, you don't have to keep adding posts to posts. If you need to change something, click on the little icon that looks like paper and a pencil to edit your posts (it's above the text).

Just checked out Oates a little more and must say he moved up a bit in my mind for this poll, though I still put him third. But I didn't realize that he was nominated for the Lady Byng 6 times - never won that or any other trophy! Also, I forgot that he also was on that Washington team that made it to the finals - though they didn't really get close to winning it.

I am having a tough time choosing between Park and Ratelle.

My reasoning is that I think that the guys who got close must think about it a lot more than the guys who never even got a whiff like Dionne (unquestionably a superstar who deserved a better fate too mind you). I guess my way of thinking should lead me to Oates who was one game away but Park and Ratelle were in the finals multiple times, and were there on two different teams (not to mention the heartbreaking '79 semi-final loss to the Habs). Also, they both came across to me as classier guys than Oates.

Consider that other than the "Let's give Scorcese an award before it's too late" 1984 Bill Masterton Trophy, Brad Park has absolutely no silverware to his name! I mean, when he goes to some NHL function and runs into say, Ken Dryden, who won something like 6 cups in his 9 years as a player, as well as the Calder etc, well, they must just end up talking about the weather or something I guess.

Having said that though, Jean Ratelle was such a classy/COOL guy and a great player, and though he won the the Lady Byng twice and the Bill Masterton once, I think he goes under the radar as a great player even more than Park. Consider that, but for an injury, he very well could have beaten Espo for the Art Ross in 1972, one of the three times he made it to the Cup final too. Look at his stats that year:

63 Games played ----- 46 Goals 63 Assists 109 Points

And yet how many of the kids out there even know who he is?

So, by the thinnest of margins, my vote of sorrow goes to the classiest player ever to play in the NHL, Mr. Jean Ratelle.

It was also a sad way to end his career to.

CANUCKS RULE!!!

Beans, vote "Others" then - he was on the list on first post above actually. There are so many deserving players it was hard to make the main list (players that I cheered for, like Neely, came to mind).

On this poll, lets say it's okay to be subjective. It's not a "who was greater?" question. It's more like a "who would you personally really have liked to have seen win the Cup" question. Aside from greatness therefore, maybe the character of the player or the fact that he got a very close sniff of the Cup may enter into the equation. But maybe the opposite - maybe the fact he never got a close sniff of the Cup makes you feel more sorry for him.

I'm going to answer a little later on the weekend (need to debate who deserves my sorrow most over lunch first!)

I would have to say Adam Oates. He deserved more than he got for sure.

I would have voted Lafontaine if he was on the list.
willus3 Posted - 03/24/2007 : 06:32:31
This was a tough one. Great list too. I voted Dionne but i was torn between him and Park. Both of these are guys are hugely under appreciated. You hear a lot of people knock them for not winning a cup. To me that's such a crock. If you don't have talented players around you, it won't happen. Just imagine Dionne on Montreal of the 70's teams. It's likely he would be closer to Gretzky in career points. And he would have the cups he deserves.
Saku Steen Posted - 03/24/2007 : 04:36:37
I voted Cam Neely but then after reading that post, I would have voted Pavel Bure. I thought he had one, but he didnt.

I voted Adam Oates his last season was with the Ducks and they made it to the cup final how sad
SlowShot Posted - 03/23/2007 : 21:28:29
Now since you list other people i would say Daryl Sittler and
Borje Salming just because there leafs and they were both amazing

Go LEAFS
andyhack Posted - 03/23/2007 : 21:26:16
Some others would include:

Pavel Bure
Harry Howell
Norm Ullman
Rod Gilbert
Ron Hextall
Rick Middleton
Pat Lafontaine
Dino Ciccarelli
Mike Gartner
Keith Primeau
Daryl Sittler
Borje Salming
and still a few more

So if you vote Other, please post a quick comment and say who

I feel bad for all of them but in particular two or three. Thinking over which one I'll vote for.
