My whole point is that this should be more than an offensive award. The most effective (offensively and defensively)player was Staal.
Turn the argument around though and you get a different conclusion: While Malkin may not have been on the PK, why wasn't Staal on the PP? If you're saying that PKs took away from his ability to score, you may have an argument, except that he was a chaser and did produce on the PK. THose weren't idle moments for Staal. They are different kinds of players. Perhaps Staal's achievements may not be as statistically tangible, but I think that he also wasn't as outstanding to watch play. Malkin wasn't on Crosby's line, he only got time with Crosby when they were in an urgent need for a goal or on the PP. Most of the time Malkin lined up with Talbot and Armstrong. Once Roberts came, Recchi and Roberts played on Malkin's line some also, but not for a vast majority of the season. Staal also played with Malkin for a couple weeks in February. Once Roberts arrived, Armstrong and Malone played with Staal. This is when he really began to come on to be completely honest. Malkin had a better season right from the start (he won October and November Rookie of the Month awards). Because the award is given for performance over the entirety of the season, Malkin wins it.
Now, if you want to include playoffs (which my guess is that is most of where you saw these two play), Staal was more effective. However the award isn't about the playoffs, it's about the entirety of the season. I watched games from the beginning of the season to the end and regularly I left thinking that Malkin was a very impressive player. I very seldom had that thought about Staal until March. And it's not like I wasn't watching Staal. He had his own spotlight on him because of his name and being the top pick, also he (like Malkin) is easy to pick out on the ice because of his height. He had his chance to shine, but did not shine as brightly as Malkin. |

It's 3-4 minutes less if you actually check the stats. And Staal had half as many points. He is the best defensive forward of the three, but he majorly lags offensively behind Malkin and Stastny. |

How is it that so many people are not saying Staal?? It is not an offensive award, it is a best 1st year player award. How are any of the players people are citing (Malkin, Stastny, Wolski, etc) better that Staal on the defensive side of the puck?? Many of them are not better offensively either, considering guys like Malkin and Stastny played 5-6 minutes more per game.

Will: Malkin, most often the Calder is decided mainly off of points, which Malkin led in and not very often do they actually break it down and say well he was better defensively and had close to the same points well atleast that's what I think some may disagree.
Should: Stastny hands down, He was amazing all season (especially that 20 game point scoring streak.) unlike Malkin who had his hot streaks then seemed to just coast for a few games. Also Pittsburgh didn't really rely on him (he was a factor but definetely not the reason why they are in the playoffs) while Stastny was amazing when his team was fighting for the final playoff spot. |

Malkin wasn't even the best rookie on the Penguins. Staal should win this. There is far too much emphasis put on to offensive stats for this reward. Staal played awesome on both sides of the puck. For rookies, 2nd in goals, 6th in points, 2nd in +/-, only 24 penalty minutes in 81 games, 1st in short handed goals(led the league!), 1st in shooting percent, and all of this in only 14 minutes a game. He is easily the most effective rookie player this year. My second choice would be Matt Carle from the Sharks.
Is the award for best rookie player or best offensive rookie player?? |

Malkin. He led rookies in scoring, and helped the Pens get to where they are. I voted for him. |

Malkin led the 3 in all major scoring categories with fewer games played and had an outstanding rookie season all around despite many stresses including a new language, culture and legal issues stemming from his modern day defection. Stastny did not accomplish what Malkin did. Malkin will win and should win the Calder.
I don't know how you can say he was such a floater. He didn't stand out as the superstar on the team because he played on the same team as Crosby and typically on a different line. He hasn't proved anything yet. Except that he can play in the league and score well. Character judgments of his play ought to be postponed until he doesn't have all types of other challenges that Staal and Stastny didn't have to deal with. |

Stastny.
Malkin proved to be a floater. I couldn't give an award to a player who didn't show up for every shift. Unless of course there was a Floater award.
Staal, while impressive didn't accomplish what Stastny did. Staal is excellent defensively though, maybe even a future Selke winner.
