Posted - 02/08/2008 : 12:23:53 Sorry Guys, I have to reiterate that it is not McCabe's fault that he is overpaid. When he was signed the salaries were totally out of control on the free agent market and JFJ had no other choice but to sign him or lose him. Someone else at that time would have paid him just as much. In the meantime if Ferguson would have let him go, he would have had to dole out equal bucks to try and sign someone comparable. McCabe was just fortunate because he was coming off his biggest season points wise and as the cliche goes, "timing is everything". He can never play up to the amount of that contract but like I said it isn't his fault and I wish people would just get over it.....he is still a damn good player and the Leaf defense is much poorer when he is out as their record without him will attest. |

Posted - 02/08/2008 : 09:24:07 Beans, I read your post. I never said you thought Mccabe was bad. Most people on this site slam him for screwing up, including me at times. Everybody overlooks his great plays for his mistakes, and that's not right.

Posted - 02/08/2008 : 08:46:59 Guys, guys, guys, READ THE POST.
I never said that McCabe wasn't a good defenseman or that I have never seen anything good out of him. What I clear said is that that I have not seen anything from him to put him in the same class as Pronger, Neidermayer, Zubov, Redden, and the likes.
McCabe is a good player, and I think he would actually be better away from the TO media environment. But I strongly agree that he is overpaid compared to what he brings to a team and he is not in the same class on the ice and the d-men in his pay scale.
Here is a list of defensemen making $6 million or more per season.
Timonen, Kimmo Lidstrom, Nicklas Chara, Zdeno McCabe, Bryan Jovanovski, Ed Niedermayer, Scott Redden, Wade Pronger, Chris Souray, Sheldon Blake, Rob Rafalski, Brian
If I had to rank these defensemen, McCabe would be in the bottom two(with Souray).
Here is a list of Defensemen making between $4 and $5.9 million
Markov, Andrei Gonchar, Sergei Hamrlik, Roman Schneider, Mathieu Kubina, Pavel Johnsson, Kim Foote, Adam Hannan, Scott Kaberle, Tomas Norstrom, Mattias Aucoin, Adrian McKee, Jay Zubov, Sergei
McCabe maybe belongs in this list and he is definately not the top of this list of these guys. |

Posted - 02/08/2008 : 07:09:50 Mccabe is a great player. Why does everybody constantly thrash him? Sure, he's maybe a three million dollar player but he has skill, size and he is a great leader. I'm just wondering if any leafs fans have noticed this but, when Sundin is in a fight or is getting roughed up by somebody, he's always the first guy at the scene helping his captain out. He wasn't on the ice last night with the Komisarek insident. If he was though, I'm sure he would've been at his captain's aid.

Posted - 02/07/2008 : 19:03:31 Hey Puck, It is still not his fault that he got all that money. A lot of so called fans use it against him and it really has nothing to do with anything on the ice. He was playing his best hockey of the season just before the injury as was the whole team. They certainly went in the tank after that. Well look what happened tonight, McCabe comes back and plays an outstanding game and we beat the hottest team in the league right in their own barn. Coincidence, maybe, but I bet McCabe was a major factor in this game. I am not a big fan of his but just think he takes an abundance of flack he doesn't always deserve. |

I'm really sorry, but I have never seen anything from McCabe be it offensively or defensively that would put him in the same class as any of these guys. He make 175% of what Zubov??? That is just plain foolish.
He was phenomenally over paid, and that was a huge mistake by JFJ. If McCabe was forcing that number, he should have been sent packing. Let someone else over pay him.
By the way, I will vote once the option of gut the team and rebuild is there!

Posted - 02/07/2008 : 17:05:42 Antro, I guess I should not phrase it that way.
McCabe signed a huge top 10 D man in the league contract, and has not played as well as he is capable. Even though he played better than some of the other Dmen this year does not mean that he has earned his top notch salary.
McCabe's best game is his defence, not his offence. When he plays a defensive game his points will come. When he plays the offensive game his defence suffers, and that is what everyone notices...
By the way I have been a Leafs fan since 1966, I was 8 at the time...

Leafs need improvement, and they need it fast if you lose 8-0 to the Panthers, you know that its time for a change In my opinion though, you need to get rid of dead weights Sundin and McCabe need to go, they had their glory times but it is time to give them the boot they are just not cuttin it. Waste of money

Posted - 02/07/2008 : 16:32:08 Nash I am just a little curious what you are going to do with: Raycroft Gill Kubina Deveraux Tlusty Bell Ponikarovski They are all under contract with the Leafs next season, and represented by the ???.
My projection on the players that you have, and their cap hit for next season. I am sure Steen, Stajan, and Wellwood will want more money, and the players that you picked up as free agents are my guess at their new cap hit, and I was very conservative...
Players Cap Hit
Keep 26.63
Marlies 0.42
??? 14.25
J. Hedberg 1.50
B. Campbell 4.00
M. Commodore 2.00
K. Huselius 3.00
J. Williams 2.00
N. Hagman 1.50
B. Willsie 1.50
B. Radivojevic 1.50
Total Cap Hit 58.30

Posted - 02/07/2008 : 16:03:06 If he can stay healthy, he can easily break-out with a possible 60-70 points season. All he needs is a decent winger. Huselius would bring that presence.

Posted - 02/07/2008 : 14:17:55 Hey Puck, Good post on my team son. My only question was your reference to McCabe being an overpaid under achiever. I can agree with the over paid part but he was one of the best players on the team and after his injury was when the team went in the tank. I know people love to hate the guy but the truth is he is a 30 minute guy and much more valuable than outsiders give him credit for. I know his point totals were down this year but that was more of a team drought than a problem of his. As far as being overpaid, then I agree but if you remember when he was signed that was the going rate at the time for a player of his caliber and it was pay it or lose him. It is not his fault he is making too much.......it was just what players of his stature were getting on the free agent market at that time.
Hey Nashville, what is it that people see in Wellwood that I don't see? I noticed he was on your keeper list. |

Posted - 02/07/2008 : 10:31:28 I have to agree with Pucknuts, there's not much the leafs can do. If I become the next gm of the leafs, this is what I'd do:
Keep the following players to build around:
D Kaberle, D Colaiacovo, D White, D Stralman, F Stajan, F Steen, F Wellwood, F Antropov, F Kilger and G Toskala.
Players I have to keep because nobody wants them:
Blake, Mccabe and Tucker
That leaves us at roughly, 25 mil.
Then, in the off-season, I sign a few free agents:
G Johan Hedberg, C Michael Ryan, D Brian Campbell, D Mike Commodore, LW Kristian Huselius, C Jason Williams, LW Nicklas Hagman, RW Brian Willsie and RW Branko Radevojevic
Then I bring up from the minors:
F Chris Newbury and F Jason Earl

Posted - 02/07/2008 : 10:01:01 Forsberg is not coming to Toronto he has turned down numerous teams that are in the playoff hunt why would he want to come to Toronto, and miss the playoffs?
Yes Kaberle could be traded, but then who would run the power play. His salary is good for the caliber of player he is so keep him.
McCabe has a NTC so unless Fletcher can find a team with a lot of cap space, and the desire to have an overpaid under achiever, I doubt he will waive it…
Sundin has said that he does not want to leave Toronto, he will go down with the ship. Again another player that would have to waive his NTC, maybe Fletcher can do this as he is the one that brought Sundin to Toronto.
For every player that you call up you will have to put another one waivers unless it is to replace an injured player. I don’t see any of the high priced players going to the minors. So the Leafs are stuck with what they have.
They can try to trade Raycroft but you will not get much. His play this season is sub par, and I do not see any team that is looking to give up an offensive player for another under achiever.
The team is not fine, but it needs a lot of work. When was the last time a team made a hand full of trades at the deadline? I cannot remember, most teams make one maybe two moves, and that is it.
For the Last selection, no comment...
