Should the NHL devise a weighted a lottery formula where every non-playoff team has a chance at the top pick?

This is a crazy idea that I thought of a week ago in regards to the drafting system. What if you took the bottom 7 teams and had a single elimination tournament to decide where they pick in the draft. The 24th place team, or 7th lowest could have a bye to the semi finals against the the lowest seed remaining. You have a relegation round to decide the draft order. Obviously, the winner of the mini tourney gets first pick. You coudl also do that with the 23rd-17th place teams to decide who picks 8-14.

I think it would give the teams something to play for straight through to the end of the season, it could provide some extra games which would bring in some extra cash, it would give the players and fans of the non-playoff teams somethign to get excited about at the end of the season, and it would award a team with somethign that they earned (rather than being awarded for tanking games). Also, it might help to give some of those in the middle teams at chance at pickig up that last piece of the puzzle that they need to make the playoffs.

You could set up the games as weekday matinees so it doesn't interfere with the playoffs. Crazy idea I know, but what do you think?

He's saying he likes to create pools featured on TSN to compare the results. He never said he makes them for TSN. Get your head on straight.

I used to like that the draft went in reverse placement order. But then I learned that some teams actually do tank their season at a certain point. At least with the current system their is a measure of "braking" on a team who would be tempted to tank.

There are lots of sources that describe the current method but here is how James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail tells it:

"The first 14 picks of the 2008 Entry Draft are determined by the NHL’s annual Draft Drawing, a weighted lottery system that is used to determine the order of selection. The 14 teams that do not qualify for the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs, or clubs that acquired those clubs’ 2008 first-round draft picks, participate in the drawing. The Club selected in the drawing may not move up more than four positions in the draft order, thus only the five Clubs with the fewest regular-season points have the opportunity to select first overall. No Club can move down more than one position as a result of the Draft Drawing."

30th spot = 25% chance at first draft pick
29th = 18.8%
28th = 14.2%
27th = 10.7

The rest of the 14 teams get it in this order 8.1%, 6.2%, 4.7%, 3.6%, 2.7%, 2.1%, 1.5%, 1.1%, 0.8% and 0.5%.

So the last 17th place team (the closest to making the playoffs that year) has a 0.5% chance of winning and they can only move up a maximum of 4 spots.

I like it!

If we offer the chance to higher placed teams then we lose the purpose of the draft, which is to keep balance among the teams. Only the people of Detroit would like to see them get first pick so they can bolster their "All-star" team.

Agree with you 100% Great post

Current system is best. The last thing we would want is for a bottom dweller to never stand a chance of getting better players.

I guess the first question that I have to ask is, What is the problem with the current system?

I fail to see a problem with the current draft system. If you are a poor team you have a shot at a good draft choice, if you are a great team you have a lesser choice.

The last five teams have a chance at the first draft choice, but the worst you can move back is two spots.

I am interested in seeing what the problems are with the current system as opposed to what we don't like.

If the NHL is to make changes there needs to be a major issue, otherwise leave it the way it is...

Why have your last two polls been same ones on TSN?
Anyway I think there should be something that makes everyteam have a chance at the top pick. Take Tampa and Atlanta for example when those teams played the other night was hockey really being played or were they both just trying to lose?
