Posted - 01/27/2009 : 10:54:57 The NHL has suspended Pavel Dasyuk and Nik Lidstrom for one game for not attending the All Star Week End. The League had warned players who played in the game before the All Star game who did not attended the 3 day NHL All Star Festivities in Montreal would be suspended for at least the game following the All Star Break. This was agreed upon by the NHL and Team GM's last February to try to stop players from skipping the All Star Game without good reason. There is nothing recorded between the NHL and the NHLPA although the NHLPA stated they were aware of the rules. Sidney Crosby initially intended on being in Montreal only Sunday for the actual game, but the NHL advised him that he was required to be at all the NHL events to avoid suspension so he attended the entire week end.
Do you agree that the players should be suspended??

Posted - 01/30/2009 : 01:16:50 What this really comes down to is how much of a responsibility the players have to their team versus how much responsibility they have to the NHL as an entity. I mean, players ultimately want to win the stanley cup for themselves and for their team, but is this their only job description? Im not sure what the rules are about team versus league and where players, as paid employees of sorts, have to put their allegiances, but I think the players have a responsibility to promote the league as well as the team, and the all-star game is part of this.
That being said, I dont agrere with the penalty. A fine to the player would have been more appropriate, that way the team is not penalized entirely by having to play short an all star (or two)

1) If you're injured enough to miss the All-Star weekend in its entirety, than I don't see how you could have magically recovered in time to play a game two days later.
2) In this particular case, we're talking about ''resting'' not ''recovering.'' But honestly, it's not like the All-Star game is played at normal speed, or even half speed. There is no hitting, there are no hard shots, there's no chasing down icing or fighting or battling in the corner or angling or lining up or any of the variants thereof. It's a leisure skate at most.
There should be absolutely no reason that they couldn't, at the very least, make an appearance at the weekend. The rules were clearly spelled out beforehand, and therefore, this punishment if 100 percent warranted.

Players have injurys that only need a couple of days to recover all the time, and if you actually looked at the break the players on the Wings had an entire week off to heal. As for you #2 thats ridiculas why would you risk getting more hurt even by going there and having to do all the other stuff you when you should be home resting. Also Datsyuk can't exactly only take part in the media stuff because he doesnt speak english, so that would be an even bigger waste of time.

Posted - 01/29/2009 : 06:46:19 If the players misses games before and after the all star break, I think it's safe to give them parole. Crosby's showing good faith by attending. Same goes for... aww, who was it? Versteeg? One of the young guns who was hurt was sitting at the bench cheering the rookies on. I forget. But he's cool too. |

And you actually just agreed with me with your mini anti-Crosby diatribe. If the gander could have played, where were the gooses Datsyuk and Lidstrom?
You make it too easy my friend, too easy....
I think you might be my new favorite poster. I laughed outloud at the soapbox comment.
Well done my man, very well done. |

Posted - 01/28/2009 : 20:48:21 Here's my spin.
I agree that the fans pay to see the best of the best play. And when they are not there, it is a kick in the pants to the fans and not as good for the league.
However, the players first and foremost responsibility is to there team, not the all star game. And if a player has a legitimate injury that will need rest and the player will be better from the rest, they should be exempt.
Here's my brilliant plan. If a player claims injury, he needs to be examined by a 3rd party doctor, paid half by the league and half by the players team. If that doctor says that the player has a legitimate injury that will improve with rest and could be negatively impacted by playing, he gets out of playing.
I can't help to also look back on last year. The Oilers lost their #1 player at the time, leading scorer, and a player who was on pace for a career year at the All Star Game. Horcoff was healthy before the All Star Game and lost the rest of his season at the game. Not to say it would not have happened the next game the Oilers played, but it didn't.
Maybe the league needs to take a look at the timing of the All Star game. Maybe at the start of the year??? Maybe the end??? Who knows.
All I know is that regardless, the player get paid by the team, not the NHL. That is where his #1 priority is and if he has a legitimate injury, he shouldn't be punished for wanting to rest and be better for his own team. |

Hey!! Didn't I see Crosby there? And isn't he ACTUALLY hurt?
Sorry couldn't resist the cheap shot at the Crosby haters..
I would agree that if the fans voted them in, they have an obligation to show up at the weekend to play or even if injured, to make an appearance so that the fans that voted them in, and who contribute to paying their salaries, can experience the interaction that only the All-star weekend provides.
If they can't do that, then they should be suspended, and I would go so far as to say even moreso than the 1 game that happens? now. The NHL is a professional sport, dependent, or at least indebted to, the fans, and the fans should be treated with the respect deserved on this weekend.
yes, you did see Crosby there, but seriously there was no reason why he couldn't perform, I mean it's not like he's severely injured, his injury wasn't that bad in the first place, he's a faker it's what he does... secondly it's not like the super skills competition, or the all star game is going to worsen any pain he's got if any at all. Like Alex said, it's not like there's any body contact at all, just a bunch of grown men having a friendly pickup game and having fun in front of there fans. He's going to play the first game back from All-star break, it's not like he'll be sitting out a few games, therefore he's feeling better, therefore he should have played for the fans and the love of the game. I feel if he couldn't perform the all-star fest, he shouldn't be allowed to play the first game back |

Posted - 01/27/2009 : 14:27:01 As much as I think the all-star game and voting are ridiculous circus events I do think that players should definetly show up if they are voted on by the fans or if selected in any fashion. People come to see their favourite. They all may not be true All-Stars because of the absurd voting system but they were selected by the people and therefor should make every effort to be available. I believe that the Redwings organization was the first one to start this blarney of resting their players during the break, seems deserved that Redwings get the first suspension. |
