Theoren Fleury has been training for an NHL comeback. Will an NHL team pick him up for the 09-10 regular season? |

I don't know if a team will sign him. I'd like to see Fleury sign for a year or 2 and stay for however long he can stay healthy and as long as he can keep up with todays NHL... However, Fleury remains under suspension for violating the NHL's substance abuse policy and would need the approval of NHL and players union doctors and commissioner Gary Bettman before he can play again. If they do allow him, what team would sign a 41 year old that hasn't played in the NHL for 6 years?

I'm split on this. I mean, he's clearly shown the will and desire to play the game in the NHL again. However, just because your heart wants to, doesn't mean your body can.
I can see a team giving him an invite to training camp, much like what the Leafs did with Steve Thomas a couple years ago. See how he pans out. If he can keep up, 4th liner. If not, well, he'll probably go make up for "4 years of sober" at the first place with a liquor license.

From what i understand, Theo was suspended indefinitely pending a 12 step rehab program of some sort that the NHL direct(s)? Although he's done his own stuff, he's yet to complete step 1 of this 12 step program and therefore the league / Bettman cannot re-instate him without breaking it's own rules. Of course, this is Bettman we're talking about? Assuming the program takes a few months minimum, he wouldn't even be cleared till part way through the season.

I agree with Beans on this one for sure. Im sure he needs money, but seriously... I really doubt he can play in the NHL anymore.
San Jose seems to have a thing for old guys who used to be good, maybe Theo fits alongside Claude Lemieux and Jeremey Roenick....(i know they both retired)

A comment I read on another site, if Theo can't help a team (talented team at that) win the Allen Cup, what is he going to do to help a NHL team win the Stanley Cup??
In fact, Fleury didn't even lead his team in scoring in the time he was with the Horse Lake Thunder. And, let's not forget the 28 PIM in 7 games with the Thunder which was 24 minutes more in PIM that Gino Odjick.
I don't think Fleury has any thing left of what made him great. Unless he's a genetic freak or on something, there is no way he is as fast as he was. Without that, he can't be gritty on the forecheck and crash the net.
I just don't see it. Not in the world of the salary cap when every dollar counts. I'm really doubtful of even a one year deal. What's the point?? What does he bring to the table |

Knowing nothing about what kind of game shape Theo might be in, or how diminished his skill set is right now, I say yes. A few things:
1. Some team always takes a chance on a player who formerly played at Theo's calibre. Whether it be some loaded team like San Jose who feels they need an extra piece, or a team like Florida, someone will pick him up. Whether he pans out or not is another thing.
2. He had a high skill set as we all know, but he was also the kind of player, despite his size, that was very feisty and physical. This tells me that in his diminished state and age (41), playing on a third line as a checker who can pot in the odd goal would fit him fairly well.
That being said, the rumours are that he is only coming back because he desperately needs the money . . . alimony payments and continuing to spend like a millionaire has reduced his bank account to a trickle.
