Posted - 09/22/2009 : 13:13:26 I agree Washington is good and could definitly lead the east.
But the reason for me is Simeon Varlamov, I still have to wait and see if he can do it. Plus Jose Theodore won't have is head in hockey this year as there was a sad tragedy in his family, so everything falls on Varlamov. I hope he does well, but I wouldn't bet on it.
There is so many ifs on every team in the eastern conference. |

Posted - 09/22/2009 : 04:56:07 . . . and that is why, Beans, I have given the edge to Washington here.
I also expect at least a slight drop from Boston - everything went right last year for them, they've lost Kessel, and they'll have a couple more rookies playing, and Toronto and Ottawa have improved. And as pointed out several times, Philly and Pittsburgh and New Jersey and the NYR and a vastly improved NYI will be a vey tough division, the toughest in the NHL I feel.
I still see Carolina as a very middling team, TB is improved, but Florida and Atlanta will be bottom feeders I think. Washington also doesn't have the same feeling as Boston getting beat out in the playoffs . . . they took the champs to 7 games, and they know they are close. I think with a healthy Ovechkin and just decent goaltending, they will be the team to beat.

Posted - 09/21/2009 : 17:09:00 I am just going out on a limb here. Everyone remembers that Boston was on top in the East after the regular season. Does anyone remember who won the year before that??? Montreal. Where did Montreal finish last year?? 8th.
I'm not trying to say that Boston can't win the East, but I wouldn't bet on it. Reason being, most teams re-tool through the off-season to knock off the best out there. Let's look at the fact that Boston has lost Kessel is going to be a dent. Or at least that production. Plus, they lost Yelle, Hnidy, Montador, Fernandez, Schafer, Ward, Eaves and Alexsson. The picked up Morris, Begin, and Sabourin. It doesn't take an engineer to see that more leaving than coming means there will be some rookies required to fill some spots. Plus, Boston only won the conference last seasons by 8 points. They only had 2 more wins than New Jersey!! I mean, Tim Thomas getting injured, Chara getting injured, a simple 5 game losing streak and that's it. Again, I'm not saying that Boston is a bad bet, but I am surprised that everyone is putting them on top.
I personally can't bet against Pitt. They have learned how to win. But, I also think that Crosby, Malkin, and the Coach realize that you don't need to win the East to win the Cup. They won't sacrifice reg season wins for health in April so at the same time, I'm not really confident they win the East either. Washington is looking sick. And no one is giving Carolina any love at all. They beat Boston in the playoffs and gave Pitt everything they had. They are also in a divison that seems to have gotten weaker in FLA and ATL again and TB is not going to be much competition for Washington or Carolina. Those two teams will benefit from 18 games each against 3 of the bottom 5 teams in the league.

I actually said that Gomez, Zherdev and Naslund left. So this mean they're no longer with the team. But the way it was written I could see it to be confusing. I had a dot after naming Drury and Gaborik. And then I started another sentence by saying who left the team. |

First of all Rangers are playing in a much tougher division then Tampa Bay. Also a whole lot is put on Gaborik. If he goes down with an injury, the Rangers wont score many goals. They have Drury as their number 1 center and then Gaborik. Naslund, Gomez and Zherdev left. And I don't think Prospal, Higgins and Kotalik will do any better. Plus they lost Mara and they don't have any depth on defense. The only good thing they got for them is Lundqvist. Great goalie, but the goals wont come easy.
Tampa Bay improve significantly in the summer. They have St-Louis, a healthy Lecavalier, Tanguay, a second year Stamkos and grinders Malone and Downie. Plus on defense they added Ohlund and Walker and drafted Hedman. They also have a solid goalie in Mike Smith and a solid backup in Niittymaki. Plus their division is still a bit weak. |

Posted - 09/18/2009 : 18:17:32 it was hard for me because it was down to 3 teams: Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Boston. I decided which team has more skill, makes smarter plays with the puck, moves the puck well and etc. Then i just took i long moment to think about which team it is and I just rolled the dice and said Boston.

Posted - 09/18/2009 : 13:43:12 For me its between Philly and Pittsburgh. Im not sure Emerey is going to be the answer in net for the Flyers if they go deep, but the forward depth is unreal and adding Pronger will be a huge boost to the club. I think they will be right there. I expect a serious breakout year for Claude Giroux and a return to form from Danny Briere.
Pitt will be amazing as well, my only concern is their defence. Unless McKee can play healthy and take Scuderi's spot I think their 5-6 holes are a little questionable... all in all not too bad though. Letang and Gologoski should both get plenty of ice this year.
Washington is my 'dark horse' to win the East. OV is going to be amazing again
There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E". |

Posted - 09/17/2009 : 08:30:33 I think Philadelphia, Boston and Washington will all lead their division. I take out Philly because their division is so strong (Lundqvist, Brodeur, Stanley Cup Champs) and plus they have Emery in net.
I'm not sure how Varlamov will do.
So I vote for Boston. |

Posted - 09/16/2009 : 16:10:07 I think it'll be between Philly, Pittsburgh, Washington and Boston, with the edge going to the two teams not in the same tough division.
I'll say Washington, but it's a toss-up for me.

Posted - 09/16/2009 : 14:55:26 good point beans, but im still sticking with philly. pittsburgh looks dangerous too though especially knowing that the leading point getter in the season and playoffs is getting better. its definitley going to be a tight race in that division |
Beans15 |
Posted - 09/16/2009 : 13:48:36 Can't believe how little love the defendind Champions get and the defending defending Cup Finalists. Crosby is getting better and better. So is Fluery, Staal, and Malkin. They took a hit on the back end a bit, but that team is not only really good, but really confident.
I like the Pens. |

Posted - 09/16/2009 : 13:12:15 i gotta go with philedelphia on this one. last year they were good enough for 4th in the conference. now with the additions of pronger and emery i'd look out for this team. if emery can find the form he had when ottawa went to the finals and he isn't a problem in the dressing room, i dont see how he cant be a solid number 1 goalie for this team. pronger was a great pickup, and he'll really make an impact on the PP. he'll also be HUGE in the playoffs. they've got great talent upfront also like phillyfan12 pointed out. if briere and gagne can stay healthy those first two lines are dangerous. also i really like what i saw from claude giroux last year. i really think he could have a great year.
theres no reason that i can see why philly shouldn't come out on top of the east (if everyone stays healthy) |
brentrock2 |
Posted - 09/16/2009 : 12:55:54 I chose Boston because they are a really skilled team and they move the puck well and play smart, also have good players and goalies
