this is true. i certainly think that malkin, crosby and overchkin will compose the top 3 point getters in the league again this year. but none of that will matter come june when mikey richards lifts that cup!!

I'm onside with the Datsyuk pick as well as being the best overall all around player! What Beans said is spot on.

The problem here lies in youpifan27's original post here on this thread. It's called "Best Hockey Player of 09-10" and then goes on to say in the poll, "What player do you think will get the most points in the 09-10 season?".

A wee bit confusing as the best player isn't necessarily the one with the most points.

Couple of things. Firstly, being +8 and having 108 points means that Ovechkin's was on the ice for barely more goals than he was on the ice for goals against. I agree whole heartedly with Ovechkin being weak defensively. Not his fault, he's paid to score not stopping shots. But Ovechkin is not a great defensive player.

And to your point if I have first pick and I am icing a hockey team for one year, I more than likely take Datsuyk as my #1 pick. At least my #1 choice for a forward because I also agree with the fella who said they would take Brodeur over any other player today. The fact that Datsuyk produces maybe 1 point less every 5 games than Ovechkin, Malkin, and Crosby means that I am not going to lose many if any games with him in the line up compared to one of the other guys Offensively. Furthermore, with Datsuyk you have a #1 centre, #1 PP centre, and #1 PK centre. Datsuyk also take 75% fewer penalties than the "Big 3". And, I sure like +34 with 97 points compared to +3, +8, or even +17 with more points from Crosby, Ovechkin, and Malkin respectively. Not saying that any of the "Big 3" are a flash in the pan, but Datsuyk has been a PPG player, more than a +20, 22 or less PIMs and more than 75 games per season in the past 4 seasons. You know exactly what you will get out of the guy every night!

I agree that Datsuyk is the best player in the NHL today and if I was looking to win I would take him. However, if I was looking to make money, I take Ovechkin. He is more marketable than any other hockey player.

first of all alexander ovechkin is a scorer and thats it! he cherry picks, is terrible on the penalty kill, is a liability defensively and very often puts himself out of position trying to deliver a big hit

ummmmmmmm ok then. heres a little bit of stats to argue with ur point here. ovechkin was 9th in the league in hits with 243. he was 26th in the league in takeaways with 60. he was also a +8. those are pretty good stats by a guy that u say is a liability defensivley. if im washington and a guy who is the best sniper in the league, im very happy with those stats. in my opinion he gets it done offensivly as well as defensivly

if i could have one player in the league for one season it would be martin brodeur. goaltending and defense win stanley cups. and the fact that crosby is the youngest captain of a cup winning team is a completely moot point, that whole organization threw it in the tank for about 5 seasons to get some of the most talented young players in teh game, leadership is not a factor in that locker room. and ovvechkin isnt the captain of his team.
sharksfan44 Posted - 09/22/2009 : 11:49:29
phlyguy90, i agree with u that datsyuk is probably the best 2 way player in the game today, but let me ask u this. if u created a team that will play for 1 year in the nhl (only one year because if it was more age would b a factor) and you can have any player that u want on this team, who would u pick. as good as datsyuk is, my top 3 options would be ovechkin, malkin or ovechkin. not because they were the top 3 scorers in the league but beacause they're all leaders on their respective teams. crosby was the youngest captain to ever win the cup. malkin lead the league in scoring during the season and playoffs, plus hes the A in pittsburgh. ovechkin is the best pure goal scorer in the league. he hits, he plays hard and hes just a beast every time he's on the ice.

first of all alexander ovechkin is a scorer and thats it! he cherry picks, is terrible on the penalty kill, is a liability defensively and very often puts himself out of position trying to deliver a big hit. sydney crosby is an excellent hockey player and i think that he has become the second best all around player in the league but...hes a friggin crybaby! the league goes out of their way to protect him. he didnt even get a game misconduct penalty last year when he was the third man in during a fight, and he even punched a grown man between the leagues! screw him!!

Pavel Datsyuk is a good player but I dont think as good as Ovechkin and Crosbt, even Malkin.Ovy, Crosby and Malkin can do the same things that datsyuk does.

when are people gonna wake up and realize the just because you dont put up the most points doesnt neccessarily mean your not the best player in any given hockey league. i'm sick of all these new fans that are only interested in points and stats, real hockey players play to win games!

Getzlaf should be there i would pick hi in the top 5

This is quite the poll! How in the world does Rick Nash have more votes than Sidney Crosby? Better yet, how does Spezza recieve a vote? C'mon, what Sens fan actually voted for Spezza, let's be realistic here. What next, a Kings fan actually voting for Kopitar? Don't get me wrong, these are all good players, but really, is anyone gonna win the scoring title not named Crosby, Ovechkin or Malkin? I could see a guy like Thornton or Getzlaf (somehow neither is on the list?) finishing 4th/5th and possibly even 2-3 depending on injuries but what are the odds one of the "others" can beat all three of the "big 3" in a scoring race? Pretty slim......
brentrock2 Posted - 09/21/2009 : 13:45:19
Ovy is an up-front player and so is Malkin and Crosby but they all have different skills with the puck. Ovy has great desire and has lots of skill and has a great shot, Malkin has the speed and shot with the puck, Crosby is a good passer and has a fairly good shot and makes smart plays with the puck. The only thing about Crosby I find is that he is a wuss but still a great player.

There are lots of other players that are almost as these three but as to me I think these are at least on my top 10 list of the best player in the NHL. But I think Ovy is #1 on my top 10 list because he is faboulous and skilled! Awesome moves with the puck!

If it would be for a pool I would go with safety and pick Ovechkin.

But here I go for potential so I vote for Crosby.
Axey Posted - 09/19/2009 : 12:49:14
After the top 3 I'm picking Getzlaf.
Jephman Posted - 09/19/2009 : 11:19:56
I picked Ovechkin because I think Backstrom is really going to put up some solid numbers this year and play the set up man for Ovie. Also, Thornton will either be fourth or sneak into the top 3, his line is too solid for him not to.

Edit: How could I forget Getzlaf? Perry looks to be a +80 point player and so does Ryan, how could he not get over 100 points?

The only player that you said that I think will get 100+ points this year is lecavalier. Therefore , I think Zetterberg and Heatley are 80-99 point players.

This one was tough, down between 2 players: Malkin and Ovechkin.

Malkin got the most points last year but not by that far, but that might change this year. i think that Ovechkin will turn it around and get the most points. In the meantime, lets just see what happens, shall we.

now im kinda playing it safe and taking one of the big three in evgeni malkin. he was the leading scorer in the regular season and playoffs and i dont see him cooling off at all this upcoming season. this is a tough question especially when there are so many good players on this list.

as a sharks fan i was really surpriesd not to see joe thornton on this list. i no he didnt have the best year last year points wise (for joe thornton) but now that he's got arguebly the best sniper in the league on his wing in dany heatley, he could easily reach 100+ points this year and i wouldnt be surprised not to see him in the top 5 in scoring this year
