You can't change the question in the middle of polling, but seen as you did, I'm going to reset the results to make it fair. |

I've taken these dudes on at topics that are so close to home that you can't win (even if you're right). If you don't believe me go to the Trash Talk -> Edmonton Stinks! thread. This forum is stubborn so it's fun to get the folks here all riled up. You just gotta take it with a grain of salt.
Go Team Canada
Oh and Mp, you were wondering what I meant by the "Hip hip hooray" comment. I just clicked on your profile and it said that your location was Canada. I then read your posts tearing up the Canadian hockey system, so I sarcastically made a comment about how "supportive" you were of what I thought was your home land. Turns out you're from Belarus, I think you're still mad over that 8-2 thumping in the semi-finals of the '02 Olympics |

Umm The Canadians have the best players in the world. Maby if Team Canada had a month together to practice then they would gain chemistry. Don't post stupid crap like this again.
Last time I checked, every team had the same amount of "practise" so that is a weak excuse. Canada flat out sucked.

I speak for myself only, in everything that I said because that is my opinion and it's really funny how when a russian guy posts his opinion you're dying to prove me wrong,
No offence, but I think you've lost the point you were trying to make. You tried to stir the pot and piss people off, then when they replied in kind, you got bent out of shape. Don't dish it out if you can't take it.
Besides, what reponse would you expect if you went to England and insulted English football/soccer? Or Brazilian soccer in Brazil? And if you went to New Zealand and insulted NZ rugby what would you hear? Unless you are so dense that light bends around you, you had to know that you would get this kind of response. Why then, are you so upset that we are defending the game we love? Hockey is Canada. Canada is hockey. Deal with it.
Futhermore, how can you call our assertions that Gretzky is is the best and the NHL is the best egotistic? 99% of all professional hockey players worldwide want to play in the NHL. That is why there was an exodus of Russian players defecting to North America in the 80's. They themselves said they wanted to play hockey with the best. Therefore, by your argument, all Russian players in the NHL are egotists. Hell, all NHL, AHL, ECHL, CHL, Swedish Elite League, etc. etc, players are egotists because they want to play in the NHL. In fact, let's call a spade a spade, every person who has ever played or enjoyed hockey on any level is an egotist, except you. How egotistical is that?
And don't use money as an arguement, because no kid grows up thinking that he/she wants to play hockey for millions of dollars. They all dream, however, of hoisting the Stanley Cup above their heads, and they all dream of playing with, and meetings, the likes of Gretzky, Roy, Messier, and now Crosby.
You don't have to like or agree with what we say, that's part of what makes this country great. But you really ought to lend your ear to what your Russian and Belurussian players are saying, and have been for almost 30 years now. And you should know that if you push Canadian hockey, Canadian hockey pushes back. |

Posted - 12/03/2006 : 13:50:30 You got me all wrong (especially my name):
I never said the NHL is the best league ever and in the greatest player ever poll I didn't even vote for Gretzky. If I would say that the NHL is the best league ever, I would say it out of my love for hockey and not because I'm Canadian.
I'm not "dying to prove you wrong" by any means... I just strongly disagree with your assessments that we are egotistic and that the Canadian system is out of disrespect for the Russians.
Our Canadian players this year were great but the team was terrible. I won't sugar coat anything. Our performance in Italy was disgraceful.
Sorry, I don't feel like putting on a CCCP jersey and cheering for the other side. It's not out of disrespect for you or your buddies, I would just much rather cheer for my own country. I don't understand what that has to do with being tough or not... |

Posted - 11/29/2006 : 23:57:21 Am I the only one who noticed how incredibly hard the other countries were hitting at the 06 olympics? What has happened is that the Europeans have come over an played in the NHL and effectively adopted a hybrid game at international level. It's a sweet game; hitting and finesse. Imagine that, the new NHL.
And Bablaboushka, the canadians have been hitting at the international level for much longer than the 10 years the pros have been involved. It has always been our way. |

Well come on man, how slow are the Russians if they can't grasp the fact that Canadians, for the past decade or so, have been playing gritty/aggressive hockey. It seems to me that when you compete against anyone at a professional level, at any sport, you want to know what their style is and how to most effectively neutralize and beat it. For you to go and say it's hatred? It's called competition man. I could be playing hockey against my best friend but once we're on the ice, we're opponents and that means each of us will do whatever we can to help our team win. Once we're off the ice, we're best buddies again. Take Zdeno Chara for example: I'm sure he doesn't hate his former teammates in Ottawa, but because he plays for Boston now, he'll crunch and grind and level any Ottawa player that comes near him to help his current team win. If Daniel Alfredsson is chasing the puck against him, he won't "respect" him and lay off the puck, he'll drive for it and battle until he gets it.
Funny how you say Canada plays the way they do because they "know" Russia is better. That's a little absurd. It's possible that Russia is better, but if Canada is smarter and uses physical contact to wear out the Russians then they obviously deserve the win. There's no description on the gamesheet of how the game was played, as long as there are more goals on Canada's side than Russia's then Canada has accomplished its task.
Hockey is not a game of ethics. If that's what you're looking for, play golf. |

Posted - 11/29/2006 : 08:33:48 Being a coach in the minor hockey system, I can see that skill is being emphasized now more than ever. It could also be because I'm in the East because it seems like the West puts more of an emphasis on physical play. The point of the game, only a few years ago, seemed to be make the other team earn their ice. Defensemen were told to play the man instead of the puck, and while that philosophy is still present to some extent, the crackdown on obstruction and interference has made this way of playing obsolete. Where players used to take each other out of the play, now they have to keep their hands on their sticks and their sticks on the ice, hoping to either poke the puck away, or hoping that the opposing player won't push them out of the way.
You of all people must be happy about the "new NHL", basically the reinforcement of obstruction penalties. The game is gearing more towards speed and puck movement (hence the reason the Buffalo Sabres are so successful). As I'm sure these rules will also be reinforced in international play and eventually the Olympics in 2010, people like you have no reason to dislike Canada's system because it has completely changed. It is no longer grind-it-out hockey. I figure in 8-10 years (when the Novice-Atom level kids today will turn professional), the game will be more like basketball where you get penalized for any contact not involving the ball (pretty much). And thus people like you will get their wish and the game will be destroyed. |

How can you be a hockey fan and not care about the best league in the world? Thats like being a football (soccer) fan and not caring about the English Premiership or La Liga.
Answer me this...which league has motivated thousands of young Europeans to move to North America in search of their dream? The NHL. Everyone wants to make the big league. Everyone wants to win the Stanley cup. If I had to choose, I would rather have my home team win the Cup than my home country win the gold in 2010. |

Ooohhhhh... someone's looking for a fight. I would vehemently argue that there has been no "egotistic trip" since '72. Few people realize that the reason '72 even came to pass was because the Soviets thought that they were better than the Canadians, and, for political reasons, felt a need to prove that. Too bad for them. Secondly, of course the Soviets were the best international team from the 50's through the 80's, as well they should have been. For they weren't the Russians, were they? No, they were the Russians, Ukrainians, Latvians, Belerussians (?), Khazaks, etc. Were a North American or European team created with such global pull, then Soviet domination would have been neutralized. Hell, there were more Soviet hockey players in '72 than there were men, women, and children in all of Canada. As far as Canadians "bullying" European players with their physical play, what a crock! Checking has always been a part of the Canadian game, and if they Russians or Europeans don't like it, they are very welcome to go find a women's league to play it. When you come here to play our game, prepare to play by our rules, or don't bother playing at all. In the end, the Canadian team will win gold in 2010, for one reason. It's in Canada. There is no sport where the crowd plays as crucial a roll to their team as a Canadian crowd at a hockey game. So I can not answer your poll, for the only answer I would select is not there. But I give you credit for stirring the perverbial pot a little, and for reminding us just how much we love our game! |

Posted - 11/28/2006 : 16:22:47 ok as far as the olympics go anybody has a chance to win, now four years befor the tournament even begins. so many things could happen in four years. none of us can say who will be on any team, sure we can guess but that's all you can do. the only thing you can say for sure is that the top six teams all have an equal chance of winning. the hockey programs in each country are either caught up to or catching up to the north american programs. meaning sweden, finland, czech, usa, canada and yes even though i hate them russia can take the gold medal home in 2010. now as far as canadians being on an ego trip. its hard not to have en ego when the best forward ever is wayne, best defencemen ever is bobby and the best goalie in the nhl was patrick. i knew someone would say tretiak from russia sorry forgot how to spell his name. thats why i said best goalie in the nhl. ok now ovechkin that little suck got everything he deserved, how can you celebrate an empty net goal like he did, when he was at the time the best player not in the nhl. to skate around like that rubbing an empty net goal to win the juniors in the face of all the players on the bench just shows he has no class and no respect for canada's game.(just in case you forgot we created this game) so to say what they did to him was wrong or whatever is ridiculous. they knew that if they frustrated him he'd do exactly what he did. which is if you forgot was skate off the ice right by the bench and into the dressing room for a little cry. as far as malkin goes i got nothing bad to say just good luck to him. SO NOW WE COME TO THE RESPECT OF THE AMERICANS.WHAT RESPECT THEY DONT DESERVE ANY IN 1980 THEY GOT LUCKY. IF YOU REMEMBER THE BEST GOALIE IN THE WORLD AT THE TIME WAS TAKING OUT AFTER THE SECOND PERIOD PRETTY MUCH HANDING THEM THE VICTORY IF TRETIAK (AGAIN STILL CANT REMEMBER HOW TO SPELL) WAS IN NET THEY WOULD NOT OF HAD A CHANCE. OK BUT THAT IS NOT EVEN THE REASON I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO RESPECT FOR THEM. I USED TO HAVE RESPECT FOR THEM UNTIL 2002. WHEN THE AMERICAN WOMENS HOCKEY TEAM PUT THE CANADIAN FLAG ON THE GROUND AND EACH TOOK A TURN WALKING ALL OVER IT. SO IN A COUNTRY THAT BURNS THERE OWN FLAG IF IT TOUCHES THE GROUND BECAUSE THEY THINK THAT'S DIRESPECTFUL. TO HAVE THE NERVE TO DO THAT TO THE CANADIAN FLAG IS UNFORGIVABLE. I WILL NEVER RESPECT ANY AMERICAN TEAM AGAIN AND IF THATS NOT A GOOD ENOUGH REASON I DONT KNOW WHAT IS. |

Posted - 11/28/2006 : 15:54:11 Well being patriotic is a little different than your usual fanfare. Of course I will cheer for Canada, I belong to it and am proud to be a citizen. It's different than cheering for the Sharks. I might not go out and brag to everyone about how good a team we have if it's not the case, but I will stand behind them every step of the way.
Of course if you added the option of Canada winning it would get picked... it's geographically relevant. Post in an American forum and they'll say the US will win. The results are logical, whether they are biased or not is a different story.
What egotistic trip? Are you confusing egoism for pride or patriotism? Canadian hockey players are taught a certain system and as most aren't aware of the other possible ways of playing the game, they proudly abide by it. Body contact/checking is part of the game and if European systems don't acknowledge it as an integral skill, then too bad! Canadian players don't complain that "Russians are too fast, how egotistical of them". Hockey is about skill and determination... respect won't stand in our way to get to our goal.
If Canadians start cheating in international competition, then I will side with you, but as long as you make excuses for other nations not being successful, I will disagree with you 100%. |

Posted - 11/28/2006 : 15:28:06 Your arguement about the Russians dominating international competion since the '50's is dead right. However, did that team not play together exclusively?? The players did not play on separate teams and then come together once a year or every 4 years and play. So they were basically professionals playing together. Did any other countries do that???
And on Malkin and Ovechkin getting the stuff beat out of them by the juniors, well, that's hockey. They didn't go outside the game. If you can't take the hits, get off the ice. In a positive note, I think Ovechkin took that game to heart and hit the gym. He takes it to players now and that is another reason he is so great. Nice example of the evolution of a player |

A couple of comments:
It is tough to compare the olympic hockey records of countries since professionals have only been playing since the 1998 games in Nagano.
As for bullying, you may have gotten your wish because if you watch the "New" NHL you will notice that hitting has pretty much been removed from the game and everyone seems to be playing the European finesse style of play. IMO the game is worse off for this reason.
Sure Canada crapped the bed in the '06 Olympics, but I will still be cheering them on in 2010 and think they have the best shot at winning.
