I also agree that Briere WILL get more money. I'm just saying that he's not worth 5 million let alone the money he will probably get. He's a good player on a GREAT team and therefore it looks like he is great too. He's not. He is just good. maybe 3 million good if he can stay healthy.
How do you figure that Briere will get 'maybe 3 million'. He was awarded $5 million this year by an arbitrator - which I recognize is a flawed system and he was awarded too much. But there is no way he gets less than $5 million per. I can see a 4 or 5 year deal for around $20-25 million.

There is no way you could sign this guy for $2.5 million. He is built for the new NHL. He may have been decent player but he is now an elite player. He is well over a point a game this season and comparing him to Brendan Morrison is laughable. Morrison had two superstars along side of him allowing him to pile up some good numbers. Still nothing close to What Briere has doen this season. Oh yah, When was the last time Brendan Morrison led his team to game 7 of the conference finals? Thats right Briere broguht it during the playoffs last year too.
The only point you make that I agree with is his health. But again, the game has changed and a little guy like Briere has a better chance of staying healthy considering the Basketball on ice league that Bettman has transformed our once great game into - but thats another story for another day. Bottom line, 49% of the insanely hockey savvy PickupHockey audience agrees. Briere is the most saught after and will get paid this summer.

Briere is a decent player on a team that has great chemistry. Although he is just coming into his prime, his stats don't lie: 311 points in 426 games over 10 seasons (and only 24 post-season games). That barely categorizes him as good, let alone "the league maximum". He's below a point a game right now while playing on the hottest team in the league. I think this is a time where the GM has to stay real and pull on the financial reigns a bit. $5 million for this guy? No way! Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but I like him a lot more a $2.5 million.
He suffers from a classic case of Brendan Morisson syndrom (a few years back anyway). A hot streak to get some money, followed by average play that was masked by the success of a strong team surrounding him.
Babs is right too, in 10 seasons he has averaged 40 games a season. So if you give him top dollar you're really paying double that!

I made sure that was clear. I know he's an extremely skilled player but he has a history of injury problems. It's pretty much the same case as Forsberg or Gaborik. They all deserve franchise money but they aren't much help when they aren't healthy, which happens to occur more frequently than it should for that kind of money. |

I think closer to $3.5-4 million would suit him better but after being awarded $5 million as a SETTLEMENT, I think he'll be asking closer to 6.
I certainly agree with you! The thing Briere has going for him is that he is just about the only player most people can name on Buffalo. He's the face of the franchise and therefore gets most of the credit for their success. Ergo, he is going to get the big bucks, deserved or not. I voted for him for that reason only, and that conformed to the poll question. Not because he is the most deserving |

Posted - 11/29/2006 : 10:47:45 I voted for Pavel Datsyuk. He is making close to $4 million this year which is much more than his performance is worth. On the other hand, he just needs a change of scenery (yes, already). Datsyuk needs who can finish off his plays and start them for him. He needs to be part of a Heatley-Spezza-Alfredsson type combo. Most of us thought that playing with Zetterberg would be enough, but he is also struggling. I think he would do much better in the Eastern Conference... wouldn't it be nice if Washington could sign him so that Ovechkin would have someone to play with.
