I accidentally posted without logging in for the first time, earlier, and it gave me an idea. What if the regular members had an anonymous, no-holds-barred, no guests allowed debate on a subject that hasn't been deeply incised before? After a few pages of debate, we could try to figure out which member was doing the posts. Any thoughts?

Oil wasn't saying there's anything wrong with Americans...and by the way, to be patriotic you might wanna spell 'Americans' right, lol

Only their spelling......and punctuation.....and possibly their ability to communicate with others. Just kidding. You cannot all be painted with one brush.

The Oil WILL make the playoffs.

Years ago, it was fun to alter the $5 bill to make Sir Wilfred look like Leonard Nimoy. Don't know if it works with the new ones. Federal offense, by the way. Sure was funny, though.

No guesses yet.
OILINONTARIO Posted - 08/08/2007 : 07:23:32
I don't think you can call it a debate, at this point. It seems that nobody is really as passionate about the Flames as I thought some might be. Could be an Alberta thing, but I figured the posts would be a bit more fiery about one of the few teams that actually challenged the Oil in the 80's. As well, I thought an anonymous forum would be perfect for people who support the Flames. I know that I wouldn't want my name attached to them!

Mikhailova Posted - 08/08/2007 : 06:53:07
Haha nice story. When I went into Alberta a few weeks ago it was pretty funny seeing all the speed limit signs that said 110 lol. People were very friendly there as well. Oh and I like the Canadian $5 bill ;)

So when do we start guessing who's who in the debate?
OILINONTARIO Posted - 08/08/2007 : 06:27:43
Funny, stupid personal story: I drove to Syracuse last week. Shortly after I crossed the border, there was a sign reading 'SYRACUSE 100'.
About an hour down I81, I started wondering why it was taking so long to drive 100 km.

Everybody I met while I stayed there was very friendly (Save for that litle bastard that took my order at McDonald's)! It's true. We're not much different. Some of us even omit the 'u' in favourite, as well.
Mikhailova Posted - 08/07/2007 : 17:09:41
Insecure? Lol no I'm not insecure, I didn't mean for it to sound like that. All I meant was that due to minor spelling differences, if I slip up and spell favorite without the u or something, you'll all know I posted since I'm the only American currently using the forum. If there were others it wouldn't be obvious and I could care less. That's all. (The IP address stuff isn't specific to me, it's just a problem regarding the anonymous idea in general). But I have posted in the Best Calgary Flame topic!

And no we aren't so different. I can't think of a pair of nations more similar than the US and Canada.

Normally, no one, but if the objective is to guess who's posting, I bet some would look at the guest number and try to crack part of the IP address.

Great idea but it could be tough due to what Mik said. But who really looks at the postal code thing when guests post though.

OILINONTARIO Posted - 08/06/2007 : 15:25:36
Yeah, I knew there would be problems. Maybe just scrap the idea for now, and try it again later. I still think the Flames thread could be good, though.
Mikhailova Posted - 08/06/2007 : 14:19:45
It sounds fun, but there are a few reasons why it wouldn't work (some have already been mentioned):

1. You can tell the Americans and Canadians apart in the way they write
2. There's no way to know who's a guest and who's a member since we're all appearing as guests
3. Your guest number is digits taken from your IP address, and each state/province has its own unique set of numbers at the beginning of its IP address. So, if you're familiar with them, you may be able to tell from where people are posting
4. If you are travelling (I am), then as you go from state to state or province to province your guest number will change because your IP address changes, so you'll appear as several different people rather than the same person
5. It's easy enough to go to a topic where someone forgot to log in and then quoted their guest comment saying "That was me" and get their guest number

If Willus, Beans , and IHC join this thread, you guys had better disguise real well, 'cause you will be real friggin' easy to identify!

I'm hoping the regulars will like the idea, and inundate the thread, as is par for any good debate. We have all seen regular posters identify themselves after posting w/out log-in. Not usuallly necessary. Am I wrong? We just need the ideal topic.
Mikhailova Posted - 08/05/2007 : 19:47:57
Well if I type something like defenseman or center or favorite or use English units you'll all know it's me.

I'll have to disguise myself as a Canadian
willus3 Posted - 08/05/2007 : 19:41:26
But how do you keep the guests out since everyone logging in will be a guest?

OILINONTARIO Posted - 08/05/2007 : 19:25:05
Log out before you post, and go hard. I was thinking maybe something like "Best cup-winning team since 2000". I'm sure somebody else has a better idea, though. Gotta include the young 'uns. Best goalie of the last 10 years, NHL expansion and/or contraction, Gretzky/Orr (Kidding), new rules, minor league hazing, anything but JFJ, I dunno. Anybody interested is welcome. Need ideas. Will start new thread if there is enough interest.
