I'm gonna go with Howard "Howie" Morenz. He was, in my mind, the first true bonafide nhl superstar. It is pretty sad how he died after he broke his leg. He was also one of the first players inducted in the Hall of Fame and he was voted the outstanding hockey player of the half-century by a national press poll.

what i wanna know is honestly what happened to human beings haha back in the day these goalies and players were titans of the era...none of the fancy pads and such that we young guys have...i don't know how they did it...especially goalies wow..."WATCH YOUR FACE" haha

From what I am reading about these players (I like this stuff!), I find Red Kelly to be maybe the most fascinating amongst the many interesting stories of that time. In addition to the ability to play as a defenceman and as a forward, it's amazing that Kelly won the Cup eight times, AND was never a Hab! That's a record for a non-Hab by the way. For an anti-Habs Bruins fan like me, that almost gives Kelly god-like status.

Besides, the guy's name is "Red". How can you not love him?

p.s. in the same way, you got a love a goalie with the name "Gump" - Gump Worsley gets my vote for the most entertaining goalie of the Original 6 era - As a member of the sad sack Rangers of that time, the Gumper was asked which team gives him the most trouble. His answer, "The Rangers!"

From what I've seen, probably Maurice Richard or Gordie Howe. Gordie because he was so good for so long, but no one will ever carry the mystique of the Rocket. There are parts of this country where he is truly more popular than Jesus amongst Christians..

The names that I posted are not in any particular order, except forwards, goalies and, defense. I find it hard to pick a "best player" as I never had a chance to see all of them play enough to make a judgment.

I liked the differnt styles that some of the players had, Howe was a scorer and a tough guy, Hull was a scorer, never heard of him fighting much, Makita started out as a small tough guy, and Hull convinced him he was more valuable on the ice than in the box, hence some Lady Byng's. Kelly was amazing as he was a star at both forward and defense, I wonder if he is the only player to win the Lady Byng at two differnt positions...

Goalies, well they speak for themselves, I did see Plante play some games only when he was with the Leafs near the end of his career, and Hall, well 502 consecutive complete games all without a mask.

If I had to pick who I though was the best, well I would have to say Gordie...

Pucknuts,

Does Howe rank first in your books? Never saw Richard and I only saw Hull in his later years, but even then I remember he was a "lift you out of your seat" type player. Also, even in the '70s I was pretty impressed with Makita as a playmaker - must have been something in the '60s. And his transformation from a tough guy to a Lady Byng winner is a fascinating story, isn't it.

Maybe I should look more at the draft you guys had, but if you have a second, please tell me how you would rank the guys you mentioned - probably tough to do.

Anyway, if I had a time machine I'd love to go back and see some of those '50s and '60s guys.
