If his back injury had not forced him to retire at 30, where do you think he would have ended up for all time goals? Is it possible he would have ended up with more than Gretzky? Here are his stats for easy reference. Possibly, but since we're dealing with hypotheticals, what if Gretzky had not had the back injury in 1991 from Suter. Gretzky's goal (and point) production took an immediate dive after that hit. He could have finished with a 1000 goals (and well over 3000 points) easily, and beaten Bossy regardless.
This isn't a bash Gretzky thread so please don't take it that way. I mentioned Gretzky's goal total because that is the total to beat. So how about this then, would Bossy have surpassed Howe's mark?

I never took it as bash Gretzky thread. It's just when dealing with hypotheticals, it opens up every other hypothetical as well, and we must be prepared to entertain those just as valiently, wouldn't you agree?
Absolutely. In another thread. This one is about Bossy.

Then I would say, no, Bossy would not have scored more than 894 goals. Why? Let's assume Bossy retired at 38 just like Gretzky (let's give him the benefit of the doubt). Even if Bossy could manage to average 40 goals per year from ages 31 to 38, he would still end up with 893 goals, just shy of Gretzky's mark.
But the real answer as to why not is simple: I think he would have been injured by age 31 if he hadn't been injured at 30. |
