Posted - 02/13/2008 : 17:28:19 In the history of hockey who do you think were the best superpests. Who did you like? Who did you despise?
Here are some I can think of:
Ken Linseman Dale Hunter Claude Lemeiux Mike Eagles Esa Tikkanen Tyson Nash Darcy Tucker Sean Avery Matthew Barnaby Alex Burrows Ian Laperriere Tomas Sandstrom Jordin Tootoo Jarkko Ruutu Dino Ciccarelli Ulf Samuelsson Bob Plager
Any others you can think of? I really detested : Tomas Sandstrom Ulf Samuelsson Claude Lemeiux

I think that means Jarkko Ruutu is doing a good job! |

Posted - 02/14/2008 : 10:50:07 I'll throw Bill Barber into this category. I never liked him at all. He was cheap. Cheap shots at guys and the absolute worst diver in the history of the game. It got so bad refs wouldn't call anything for him eventually and rightly so. He readily admits to it too.

I still don't think anyone was as good of a pest as Esa Tikkanen. He was superb at getting under the other players skin. And when you look at his style of play, I find him different than other "superpests" in I don't recall him being a very dirty player. Maybe I am off my rocker a bit on that, but I recall him just being really really agressive, but not dirty.
Tikkanen was dirty Beans. His stick work was pretty brutal. Lots of wrist slashing and sticking in the ribs. I really likes how he played too though. Minus the stick work.

I was trying to think of some of the pests from the 60's and 70's.

Posted - 02/13/2008 : 18:01:42 Tikkanen was good at what he did. I remember a poll asked to NHL players circa late 80's as to who was the yappiest player. Tikkanen was second only to Gretz. I think Gretz yappiness was more whining.

He was my favotire pest, even after he left the Oilers. He was also pretty clutch on the score sheet. He has seasons over 30 goals and 70 points. In the end, 630 points in 877 games for a guy that was a pest and not a scorer was pretty decent.
The guys I dislike?? Ulf Samuelsson was a total hack. No respect for the game or the players. Tootoo I find very much like that as well. Barnaby was a tool as well. |
