It goes without saying that the "waiver wire" is the logical place for fantasy players to look when trying to improve their team. Early in the season you will see some fantasy players adding unknowns to their roster or dropping proven "names" who are off to a bad start. It's wise to check the "waiver wire" of your league as often as possible to acquire players. It is definately the place in fantasy hockey where "one man's junk is another man's treasure". In Part One of our waiver wire check, I look at goalies. Three goalies stand out as worth picking up right now- if they are available in your league: 1- Ty Conklin, Detroit. Had an outstanding season with Pittsburgh in 2007-08 filling in for the injured Marc-Andre Fleury. Conklin was 18-8 with a .923 save percentage and a 2.51 goals-against-average. While many automatically gave Chris Osgood the #1 goalie job in Detroit, Conklin should see his share of action- especially if Osgood falters. As of this writing Conklin is 1-0 and allowed one goal in the win. If you are in a large league chances are the 30 NHL starting goalies may have been picked up before Conklin. A good waiver wire pickup if he's available. 2- Jaroslav Halak, Montreal. Carey Price is the goaltender of the future in Montreal. There are rumours that the Canadiens may "showcase" Halak in order to trade him for help at forward or defense. Halak would be a #1 goalie for many teams. Allowed one goal in the one game (a win) he has played this season. A good waiver wire pickup now as he backs up Price- a better pickup if, or when he is traded. 3- Brian Boucher, San Jose. Remember his five consecutive shutouts with Phoenix five years ago? Well, he has one already in his first game this season. Boucher will serve as backup to Evgeni Nabokov. He may not get a lot of playing time but chances are that new Sharks coach Todd McLellan may not use Nabakov as a workhorse like last year's coach Ron Wilson did. Will fill in great when he fills in. Worth consideration as a waiver wire pickup if you think he will get you enough starts. Next time- a look at defensemen to check for on the waiver wire.
