Posted - 01/19/2009 : 10:38:20 More about the Kontinental Hockey League from the previous column:
Two former NHL goalies, Robert Esche and Ray Emery led a foreign squad to a 7-6 win over an all-Russian team in the KHL All-Star game held outdoors in Red Square on January 10.
CZECHING IN....
Center Robert Reichel who scored 40 goals twice with Calgary (1992-93 and 1993-94) and who last played in the NHL with Toronto in 2003-04 is now with Litvinov CHP HC in the Czech Republic League. As of this writing Reichel is fifth in scoring with 40 points in 42 games. Reichel scored 252 goals and 630 points in 830 NHL games.
Another center, Martin Straka, who had a 15-year NHL career is with Plzen HC. He is just behind Reichel in scoring with 39 points in 41 games. Straka had 257 goals and 717 points in 954 NHL games.
David Vyborny, a 34-year-old right winger spent seven years with Columbus Blue Jackets and scored 20 or more goals in three seasons. Vyboryny now plays for Sparta Praha in the Czech Republic League and is tenth in scoring with 37 points in 41 games.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO....
Alexandre Daigle, the poster boy for failed number one NHL Entry Draft picks is now playing for Davos in Switzerland.
Daigle was selected first overall by Ottawa in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft ahead of such players as Chris Pronger (#2) and Paul Kariya (#4) but had an unspectacular NHL career including stops in Ottawa, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, New York (Rangers) and Minnesota. He was out of hockey for the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons.
