The Senators have signed Jason Spezza to a 7 year - 49$ million deal.

The Senators have locked up for the long term: Heatley, Spezza, Alfredsson, Emery and a gaggle of others - Fisher, Phillips, Volchenkov.

This bodes extremely well in my eyes for the next few seasons.

Wow, what's with all the leaf fans who?

After playing in the NHL, it's hard to watch hockey games.

I'm sad for the Leafs the next few years. May they have much luck and mercy upon them the next 7 years.

Wow, they're short talent then.

They have to pick a couple more solid players. Eaves will want a huge bonus from his rookie contract. That will be at least 2 million and then Meszaros will be closer to 3 million if not more.

This gives a lot of their young talent a good chance to break into the NHL in the next couple of years, if the cap isn't raised. A look at some those rookies.

Brian Lee-Defenceman-couldreplace Redden or Meszaros
Alexei Kaigorodov-Center-He has size and skill
Nick Foligno-Left Wing-Aggresive scorer can work on the penalty kill
Igor Mirnov-Center-good player but unsure about coming to Canada

For the sake of this conversation on affording players down the road.

08-09 Ottawa UFA/RFA Players

Wade Redden-UFA
Luke Richardson-UFA
Matt Carkner-UFA
Chris Kelly-UFA
Shean Donovan-UFA
Randy Robitaille-UFA
Niko Dimitrakos-UFA

Antoine Vermette-RFA
Patrick Eaves-RFA
Brian McGratton-RFA
Josh Hennessy-RFA
Andrej Meszaros-RFA

The are locked into 12 players for $41.4 million for 08/09.

For 09/10 they are locked into 8 players for $31.4 million

As FLY says, the Cap could and more then likely will be going up again, but I still think Ottawa is going to have some interesting choices next year. Redden will not be back, that's a give in. Vermette, Meszaros, and Eaves are all solid players that I could see getting offer sheets from other teams. At the least, they will be looking for raises. Add in McGratton(shouldn't lose your tough guy) and Kelly.

There may even more "creative accounting" required in the Nations Capital.

Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!!

At the end of the day with that core they shouldn't needrental players just role players.
Canucks Man Posted - 11/03/2007 : 01:18:27
I gotta agree with Mr. Smith on this one. It will be hard for the Sens to ge out and get rental players and such with all the cap space aslready eatin up. Also dont look fo rthem to be big in the free agent market in years to come.

CANUCKS RULE!!!

Except if recent history continues, then the cap will be $10 million more than it is now in a matter of a couple of years or so.
Greg Smith Posted - 11/02/2007 : 15:32:39
The only down side to this is the amount of breathing space under the cap limit. It doesn't give Ottawa many options going into the offseason free agent wise. They have a solid team though, so it shouldn't be a problem for them.

nicee!!! ottawa is set for a few more years. there gonna be a presidents cup contender for a few more years!!!
Beans15 Posted - 11/02/2007 : 15:14:24
The big three are all signed through 11/12. Heatley through 13/14, and Spezza now through 14/15.

I wouldn't be happy if I was a goalie in the NE Today!!

Outside of those three, the only other guys signed through 10/11 are Phillips and Fisher. So it looks like Ottawa is gunning for a 2-3 year dynasty before the look to rebuild.

Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!!
