I was a big Dale Hawerchuck fan and he is my favourite but I guess Perreault was the greatest. He had that "lift you out of your seat" speed and shiftiness and he did everything in a dynamic way. Hawerchuk lacked the speed but certainly could carry the team. An honorable mention would have to be Housley. My second favourite. |

My first thought was LaFontaine followed closely by Perreault.

For me it is without question Gilbert Perreault. To this day he is one of the best skaters and best stickhandlers I have seen. It was a beautiful thing, watching him pay. One of those few players who could get you out of your seat.
LaFontaine is a distant second.

I will have to agree with Perreault in Buffalo. I grew up in Niagara falls in the 70's, and with an "antenna" you could get Toronto, and Buffalo stations.
The news in Buffalo was funny when the Sabres won it would be hi-light after hi-light, usually Perreault with an amazing rush, but if they lost it was 30 seconds, and onto the other sports...
I have never seen another player so Bow legged as Perreault...

I gotta agree with our Honourable Guest. Perreault was also a very exciting player to watch. One of the best stickhandlers ever. Also, except for seasons where he had injuries, he always led the Sabres in points.
Of course he was also the key part of the French Connection, which has gotta be one of the coolest names for a line ever - though I also like the GAG (Goal A Game) line of the early 70s Rangers.
Anyway, Perreault is another great from the '70s. I noticed a guest on the Gretzky thread (quite wound up in his awe for Wayne), talking about how Wayne was not stuck in '70s way of thinking. That may be so, and perhaps the comment wasn't meant as a knock on '70s hockey as much as a compliment about Wayne's genius, but one thing I find a bit regrettable about the Gretzky legacy is that guys like Perreault sort of get washed away from people's minds as they marvel over Wayne's exploits. That's of course not a knock on Wayne. But I do think it's unfortunate. |

I can't say there is one that stands out. My personal favorite was Pat LaFontaine, but that doesn't mean he was the best.
My Top 5 Sabres would be, in not preticular order:
Perreault
LaFontaine
Housley
Hawerchuk
Hasek
