After losing to Tampa Bay tonight, the Flyers are sitting 5 points behind the Devils for the final playoff spot in the East. With 27 points in 30 games, the Flyers have fewer points than last year's bottom two teams - Columbus and Edmonton.

With 18 games to go, the Flyers can still rally to make the playoffs, but it's not looking good right now. Their best player Claude Giroux is playing well, but not superstar great like he played last season, especially in the playoffs where he tallied 17 points in 10 games.

Defensively, there are only two teams who have allowed more goals than the Flyers - the Sabres and Panthers - these two teams which sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

The Flyers are like Jekyll and Hyde. At home, Philadelphia's record is 9-4-1, but on the road, they're atrocious, with a record of 4-12-0.

What happened to the team which knocked out the Penguins in the first round of the playoffs last year?

This is a great question....that no one seems to know the answer to.
This is a team that was predicted to comfortably make the playoffs and with good goaltending maybe fight for 1st in their division. On paper they have 3(4) solid lines with an adequate back end.
On top of that, they had a large number of players playing prior to the lock out and had very little turnover with personnel....same coach, goalie, stars, etc.
I think their horrendous start/schedule really derailed them right out of the gate. Having said that, they have had several times to right the ship but cannot string together more than 2 wins. Even if they could have won their 2 games against the Devils and last night against the Lightning they still would have been in position to squeak in.
The reasons/excuses are many.....the new "overload" system implemented, coach has lost the room, the D are to slow for system, injuries, bad bounces, etc, etc.
I think it is a combination of them all...a perfect (or imperfect)storm that has them reeling so badly they can't come out of it. Last night's loss was a perfect example of this...must win game that was within reach but cople of misreads have puck in back of net.
Unfortunately the only person that could have righted the ship is sitting at home with a career ending eye/concussion injury.
At this point I think their best plan is to hope for a top three draft position (Seth Jones would be perfect fit) and sell at the deadline(draft picks, draft picks, draft picks). In off season try to get a scoring winger and/or mobile Dman. I definitely don't think they need a complete rebuild....just a reboot! And clearly since Holmgren hasn't made a move/firing yet, he feels same way....Lindy Ruff is a tempting carrot!
