Haha that's awesome! I love how Latendresse is there because his 84 was the last number never worn. Also Marc-Andre Bergeron with 47? Then again the only other player I can think of that wears/wore 47 is John Grahame.
When did Gaborik wear 82?
And yeah 96 should be Bure hands down. |

Correct me if I am wrong... and I probably am.... but I believe Bure only wore 96 for the better part of two seasons and went back to #10 after injuring his knee.
He continued to wear #10 in Florida, and I can't see him replacing LaFleur with that number.
Then he selected #9 in New York.
It's hard to imagine him in anything but a 10. But I see your point. |

There are some amazing players missing from the list, but would you select the likes of Maurice Richard over Mr. Hockey? The "other" Richard, Henri "The Pocket Rocket" could easily be in at 16 over Marcel Dionne and with 11 Stanley Cups, he probably should be.
But the biggest omission, in my humble opinion, would be, how is Phil Esposito NOT #7? Morenz was probably the greatest player of his era, but but his era was the 20's and 30's, when families couldn't put food on the table, let alone skates on their kids.
As bumper sticker read in Boston in the early 1970's:

I'm torn. Couldn't Al Macinnis replace Doug Harvey for #2? You decide between these two defensemen who wore #2:
Al Macinnis has 1274 pts in 1416 games, 1 Stanley Cup (Flames), 1 Con Smythe Trophy and 1 Norris Trophy, 12 All-Star selections, and arguably the hardest shot in hockey history.
Doug Harvey has half as many points with 540 in 1113 games. Although, he did have 6 Stanley Cups (Canadiens), 7 Norris trophies, and 11 All-Star selections.
Harvey has more hardware, but Macinnis has more than double the points. Who is better?

Esposito would be my second pick for Number 7. Coffey is the 2nd all time leading scorer as a defensemen behind Ray Bourque by 50 points, 10th all time, and is 5th all time in playoff points. He is only 60 points behind Esposito. He also has 3 Stanley Cups while Esposito has 2.
Coffey is the man at #7. |

Has anyone actually seen Forsberg play? I thought they just put him on paper for accounting reasons, to make the roster number balance out. |

Who put Esposito ahead of Coffey. i dont see either of them, but for the sake of argument, heres my take on it.
Esposito:
-Captain of the'72 Team. I know the article is from the US but this is something even the Americans know about
-5 Art Ross trophies
-2 Cups
-1 Hart trophy
-Career stats 717g 873a 1590p
-5th all time in goals and 8th in points
Coffey:
-3 Norris trophies
-4 Cups
-Career stats 396g 1135a 1531p
-10th all time in points
I would honestly put Bourque ahead of Cofffey. Both Espo and Bourque never had the privalege of playing with either Gretzky or Lemieux for their entire career like Coffey.
Hart Trophy and Art Ross Trophies also set Espo apart from Coffey. He is just better. |

Of course I am from Edmonton. Regardless, Coffey is only 60 points behind Esposito. Coffey played Defense. Also, Bourque played 200+ more games than Coffey did while Coffey is only 48 behind Bourque.
Don't forget Coffey also had 196 playoff points on route to his 4 cups. Esposito had 137 playoff points for his one Cup. That puts them basically even in the total professional points. Did I say that Coffey played Defense??
However, I am not saying that Espo wasn't the man in his day. One of my favorite images in history and a reason I started to love Hockey was him on the bench in '72. Looking at the Russian bench and gesturing, pointing back and forth and putting up his fists trying to pick a fight. The only other hockey images that compare are Orr's diving goal and Gretzky to Lemiuex in '87.
I think this one might never be solved. Regardless if I say Coffey or you say Espo, one of them should be #7.

I disagree, we're talking personal performance here. Harvey played in a time when there were only 6 teams and obviously only 20% of the amount of players. Of course you're going to get more cups and more Norris trophies. Also, I often think they give the edge to the long retired guys because of their mystical, legendary status.
Al Macinnis. Just look at his numbers.
