For the second time in a couple of days, the Flyers and Islanders have hooked up for a trade. Earlier this week the Isles sent Alexei Zhitnik and his 3.5 million cap hit to Philly in exchange for Freddy Meyer. Then last night they finalized another deal that sent Mike York and his $2.85 million cap hit Philly for Randy Robitaille.
Looks like Garth Snow isn't the only goalie calling the shots on the Island. Freddy Meyer and Rick Dipietro have been best friends since the age of twelve, and this might have had something to do with the first deal - although the freed up cap room was obviously the main goal. In total, the Isles have cleared over $5 million, which should only further fuel the Brian Leetch rumours. I still don't see Brian Leetch signing with the cross state rival. Moreover, the waiving of Sandis Ozolinsh by the Rangers earlier this week signals that Leetch could join his old club for one final season.
We have entered the holiday trade freeze and the Isles won't be using up any of there free cap dollars until after the holidays. Stay tuned...
