Yet again some loser disgraces the game by taking a cheap shot. This time it was Scott Nichol on Jaroslav Spacek. It seemed to be a clean play by Spacek, Nichol got up & punched Spacek in the face while he wasn't looking. Nichol was give 2:00 min for Instigating, 5:00 for fiighting, a 10:00 min misconduct & a game misconduct. This play will most likely to be reviewed by the NHL & Nichol will be further penalized. What do you guys think he should get?

He should get 5-10 gms for the blatent sucker punch but will likely get 3-5 as a first time offender. If he gets less , it will be (like the new and improved hooking calls ) ..............INSANE . |

Although I think that Spacek taking Nichols into the net was not really a clean play either, the sucker punch definately warrants review and suspension. I would say 5 games minimum. However, after the Bertuzzi incident, the league may send another message in that they will not accept these kinds of actions. Could be 20ish games. It will be punishment to the player, but I am pretty sure that Nashville is not going to miss his 8 points in 32 games.

I'm thinking 3-5 games. I doubt he'll get much more than that, especially not 20. I hope it's more than 3-5 because retaliation at that level cannot exist in hockey, but I doubt it will exceed 5 games. |

I think 5-7 games would be about right. |

quote: Nashville Predators forward Scott Nichol has been suspended for nine games, without pay, for a blind-side punch to the head of Buffalo Sabres defenseman Jaroslav Spacek during NHL Game #512 at Nashville, Dec. 21.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Nichol forfeits $25,267.41. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The incident occurred at 15:21 of the third period. Nichol was assessed a minor penalty for instigating, a major for fighting, a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct as the aggressor (Rule 47.2). The suspension was issued following a hearing conducted via conference call by NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. “The punch by Mr. Nichol was deliberate, from behind, and it occurred after the referee's whistle had stopped play," Campbell said. “While Mr. Spacek was injured and left the ice, it is expected he will be available to play in Buffalo's next game."
Nichol will miss games Dec. 23 vs. Los Angeles; Dec. 26 vs. St. Louis; Dec. 29 at Dallas; Dec. 30 vs. Boston; Jan. 1 vs. Colorado; Jan. 5 at Chicago; Jan. 6 vs. St. Louis; Jan. 9 vs. Anaheim and Jan. 12 vs. Columbus
That seems fair to me. If Spacek was more serioulsy injured it should be more. But since he seems to be okay I say it's fair. |

I'm surprised it was this long but I'm quite pleased. |

I am not surprised as this kind of thing is what hurts the image of the NHL. |

I just saw on Sportsnet that Nichol has a very colorful history of fines & supsensions for dirty plays. He was fined $2,500 already this year as a warning. 9 games is good, But I doubt he will learn his lesson. |

I think it was reasonable but should get a harsher penalty if he does it again(cuz then he would be a third time offender)

If the punch causes a broken neck/other career anding injury, then is the suspension longer? |

I would imagine so. A high sticking call, for example, is 4:00 min if the player is cut & bleeding, as oppsed to 2:00 min. So it would make sense that a greater injury would warrent a harsher punishment. |
