I am jumping on the Trivia train! I got a great book that is all about hockey in the 80's. From reading part of it, it is loaded with really great trivia.
For the first question:
It is easy to answer who had the most points through the 80's (Gretzky) but who had the second most points though the 80's??

Well done Guest. Peter Stansny is correct.
You will have to wait until tomorrow for the next question. |

I was gonna say Dionne...but I'm not an expert on 80s hockey. Lake Placid pops into my mind when I hear "80s hockey" but that's about it |

Alright, next question.
In 81-82, we all know that Gretzky had the most amazing offensive year in history with 92 goals and 212 points. After that season, he signed a contract with then Oilers owner Peter Pocklington that made him the highest paid player in the league. What was the length and total value of that contract?? |

Wayne signed a 15 year contract that was worth a reported $20 million. It was designed to be end heavy, and in the start he was making about $650k-$800k/year.
Next question. In 81-82 what team had the highest payroll and what was the amount of that payroll?? (This question really puts today's salaries into perspective) |

The answer was Detroit at $3.88 million. Most first line centres in the league are worth more than that today!
They were also the leagues worst team and thier highest paid player played most of the season in the minors. |

Mind if I jump in for a sec with a question?
How did the hockey term "hat trick" get its name?
(Someone can answer, then back to you Beans ) |

Be my guest to add questions, let's just try to keep one at a time going.
As for where "Hat Trick" came from?? I have no idea. As a guess, players may have thought it was a magically thing to score three goals in a game. Kinda like "pulling a rabbit out of a hat." Hence, "Hat Trick??"
I think it's a stretch but that is my guess. |

The name caught on in hockey when a Toronto hat maker would hand out hats to Leafs players who scored 3 goals in a game. It's unknown whether he picked up the idea from cricket, but the term did originate in cricket. |

Alright, here's the latest question from the 80's. I don't expect too many people to know this at all, but there was a player from Philadelphia is 81-82 that was fines $200 for "attempting to kick an opponent." Who was he?? And for the second part of that question, a team mate in Philly was suspended for 5 games and fines $500. What infraction did he commit to get suspended??

I think there were two parts to the question, and Beans15 has not given part two the blessing...

It was Paul Holmgren who got suspended for 5 games and fined $500 for hitting referee Andy van Hellemond.
The player who got fined $200 for attempting to kick a player has not been guess yet.
I will give you a hint. Think "rodent." |

Ok, let's get this going again.
1983-84. Paul Coffey had 126 points and +52 rating, but he didn't win the Norris Trophy. The player who did had 33 points and was +14.
Who was he and where was he born!
PS- Try to guess without google or wikipedia.
If you are under the age of 15, please do some research before you make a post about anything pre-1997. |

Was it Doug wilson or Rod Langway?
I'm not sure where Wilson was born but Langway was the only NHL player ever born in Taiwan. He grew up in Boston though I think
