I'm thinking Myers will win it, I mean this kid will more than likely become one of the elite d-men of the league if he keeps up what he's doing.
However my vote (if I had one, at least I do here) goes to Duchene. Without him the Avs probably miss the playoffs and have the season everyone was predicting at the beginning of the year. I've also seen a lot more of him this year living out west, so it could be a biased vote just like it is with the voters in the east.
When Hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there too. |

You could give the same argument for Howard. Without the season he had, Detroit would have missed the playoffs. Incredible numbers for a rookie goalie on an injury riddled team.
Would the Sabres have made the playoffs without Myers? probably, but he ended up being a cornerstone of that defence as a 19-20 year old, top minutes on the team, playing in all situations, and lets not forget he ended up with only 7 less points than Duchene as a defenceman.
I actually think it's a coin toss between Howard and Myers. Another thing hurting Duchene is he doesn't have the numbers of past Calder winners:
Duchene (09-10): 24 goals, 55 pts
Kane (07-08): 21 goals, 72 pts
Malkin (06-07): 33 goals 85 pts
Ovechkin (05-06): 52 goals, 106 pts
Heatley (01-02): 26 goals, 67 pts
Gomez (99-00): 19 goals, 70 pts
Howard is comparable to past goalie winners though:
Howard (09-10): 37 wins, 2.26 GAA, .924 sv%, 3 SO
Mason (08-09): 33 wins, 2.20 GAA, .916 sv%, 10 SO
Raycroft (03-04): 29 wins, 2.05 GAA, .926 sv%, 3 SO
Nabakov (00-01): 32 wins, , 2.19 GAA, .915 sv%, 6 SO
Defence is harder as they win the calder less, but here is Myers comparison to the last two, he is superior:
Myers (09-10): 11 goals, 48 pts, +13, 24+ mins
Jackman (02-03): 3 goals, 19 pts, +23, 20 mins
Berard (96-97): 8 goals, 48 pts, +1, ?? mins
I think that Myers in the end will win out just because of the rarity of defencemen winning the Calder, and his stats would set the bar for future rookie defencemen. Duchene would lower the bar. |
