Niklas Hjalmarsson got a two game suspension from the hit from behind he laid on Jason Pominville on Monday night !
Do you guys think it's a fair punishment? More? Less? What do you think?
Personally I don't understand how a hand gesture can be the same length suspension as a dangerous hit from behind ! At LEAST three if not more, Niklas did put some
speed into that check and certainly deserves more !

| James Winiewski gets 2 games for his "gesture" and apparently that's equally severe as this reckless hit by Hjalmarsson??!! Something is wrong with the NHL....should have been 4-5 games at least. |

unfortunately, its in line with previous precedent for that sort of hit, and Hjalmarsson is a first time offender (AFAIK), so I guess we should not be surprised by 2 games.
Still, I think Miller summed things up when he lashed out at the league post-game - start sending a message that these sorts of hits are unacceptable with longer and more serious suspensions. |

| The hit was not even from behind, it was more from the side. If you watch, Pominville looks back twice to see him coming and then still turns. I'm not glad he got hurt, but I don't think it was a suspension. He did not run at him either, and there was no intent to injure, IMO |

Personally, I think the two game suspension is pretty close to what I would give for it, with all factors considered . . . however, I do agree with a lot of the points made by Miller in his commentary.
Agree with everyone about the hand gesture thing getting a ridiculous response from the NHL . . . 2 games is totally unwarranted, and demeans bad hits like this by having the same length of punishment. Should have been a small fine, that's it.

I agree with 2 games for this hit. While I don't think it was an intentionaly dirty hit and I do believe Pominville turned into him a bit, it is in the league and the player's best interest to set a standard that any hit from behind, no matter how intentional or not will not be tolerated.
On that note I think they should be watching for those guys that do intentionally turn their backs to draw the penalty (While I think Pominville turned into this hit, I don't think he is super-guilty of this in this case, I am talking about the more extreme cases). Kids these days are being coached to do that and I think its disgusting. If they are going to start handing out suspensions for "rude gestures" because of the whole role model issue, then this is a far worse crime. Somebody is going to get seriously hurt, or worse, and the guy who was about to throw a legitimite hit is going to be blamed when the recipient of the hit is to blame. |

Well, keeping consistant with my stance on this kind of thing for the past few years, this was a light suspension in my opinion. The NHL continues to punish incidents by considering the player involved and the outcome which is why they continue to have to give suspensions less than 1 week into the new season.
Once the NHL gets behind the punishment of the action pure and simple, then you will see these hits go away.
I would have been more than happy to see a message sending 10 game suspension. Tell the rest of the league that it will no longer be tolerated. Instead, it really is a slap on the wrist.
I wonder what Pominville will be doing this week end when Hjalmarsson is playing again???

I definitely agree that this suspension should be longer. Lax suspensions like this one will allow for players to continue these actions with minimal consequences.
What if that were a game against Detroit and Hjalmarsson made that same hit on Zetterberg or Datsyuk. Hjalmarsson misses a couple games, the Detroit player is out for a month. That could be the difference between Detroit or Chicago winning the Central.
More important though is the health of the players, and concussions can linger on for a very long time. Dirty hits causing concussions can not be taken lightly. |

| I agree with you Guest 4271. That hit was not from behind nor was it an attempt to injure. I do think though that 2-3 games is reasonable. Hjalmarsson is not a dirty hockey player and I have seen a lot worse hits in the past few years that did not result in any suspensions. For example, what about Matt Cooke's hit on Marc Savard. I can't remember for certain, but I think he received no games. I feel bad for Pominville and Buffalo as he's a good, classy hockey player, but IMO that hit on him warranted a suspension in the 2-3 games range at the most. As far as J.Wiesnieski also getting two games for his gesture, he has a history. Remember he charged B.Seabrook last year from the blueline to the corner and received 7 or 8 games. |
