Joe Thornton has signed a 3 year/ $21 million contract.
What do you guys think about it?
I think it's an awesome move!
He is only 31, he still has lots left in him and he had 89 points last year!
He is a true leader and will continue to be for a long time

The three years part is interesting . . . thought it would be longer. At 34 though, he'll still probably have lots left in the tank, and if it just doesn't happen in San Jose (the cup), he'll move I'd think.

Thought he might move now, but why move from a stacked team with a great chance? Even if they have been banging their head against the wall these last few years, the Sharks still have a great team.

Anyone know if it was Thornton/agen who wanted it at only 3 years, or Sharks management?

heres a quote from joe thornton from working the corners on the mercury news:

“I love it here. This is home for me and my family and I can’t imagine going anywhere else. It’s nice to have it done and now we just have to do some things to win the Stanley Cup.”

On terms of the deal: “I wanted to stay here and make it as easy as possible for both parties. It was a no-brainer for me to want to play with this group of guys so sign it and get it done with.

“With the salary cap structure, back in the old days you could have gotten $12million but nowadays you have to think of the team and what’s best for the team. The Sharks and myself made a deal that’s best for the team.

“We’re all on the same page. We just want to win. That’s the ultimate goal here. You take a little less to win a cup. We haven’t gotten there yet, but we’re going to get there.”

from his previous deal hes taking a pay cut making $200 000 less, 7 mil is still a lot but he definitley could have made more, i think this is a class act from a class guy who just wants to win.

Topic title made me double-take... There's a huge difference between resign and re-sign.

With some teams so close to the Cap that they can't ice a completely team it's nice to see a team that actually gets the salary cap world.

San Jose is near the top, no doubt. But they have 24 players signed giving them a little room for a few guys in the press box.

Most importantly, they don't have a single players signed past the 13/14 season. Furthermore, they now have Thornton, Heatley, Marleau, Clowe, Pavalski, Boyle, Murray, and Vlasic as their core signed for most if not all of the next 4 seasons. So SJ has a top quality squad with their core players all signed through the prime of their career. Once their players begin to digress, they recognize the need to rebuild and that will happen all at the same time.

This deal is great for the Sharks.

Good for hockey to have this team locked up as a contender for the next few years. They are a fun team to watch good in all postions.

Excellent signing for the Sharks.

Thornton is a franchise-type player, any way you look at it.

You can knock his playoff performance, but, he produces in the regular season. Year after year.

The playoff meltdowns can't be placed solely on him.

My only knock for Thornton is that, he does not play physical enough for his size. But, when you produce like he does, you don't really need to.

Also, he sometimes acts like he should not be hit. I find at times, when he's checked, he almost looks amazed.... like "you just hit me? Really, Joe Thornton?" of a look.

Kind of odd. He's not Gretzky. But, for the price and terms, it's a lock.

Great deal for the Sharks! I thought Thornton would resign with SJ, but i figured it'd be for a lot longer than 3 years.

three years is brilliant by the Sharks, because the contract makes Joe extremly tradeable if for some reason they decide to gut the team. brilliant contract

I would be very surprised if this contract didn't contain some sort of NTC/NMC - so I'm not sure how tradeable he is.

But still, a good signing for SJ, he would have been highly sought after next summer.
