Interesting take by Sean McCormick about the Flames and the issue surrounding their use of the cup during the hour long ceremony for Mike Vernon:
quote: Karma dude Good for Mike Vernon. He had every right to bask in the glory of his monumental night this week as the Flames raised his No. 30 to the Saddledome rafters prior to Calgary's game against Chicago, and I have nothing but admiration for his accomplishments.
But this blog isn't about Mike Vernon. It's about the Calgary Flames.
It's about the Calgary Flames and their ill-advised decision to include the Stanley Cup in the ceremony. It wasn't for decoration. That would have made the act only mildly and predictably unacceptable. But unacceptable nonetheless. No, the Flames went the country mile on this one, handing the Cup to Mike's old 1989 teammate Joe Nieuwendyk who emerged from the tunnel for the on-ice festivities with the Cup hoisted high over his head. He looked ready to grab the microphone and yell "I'M GOING TO DISNEYLAND!"
I was stunned. Nearly as stunned as Harvey the Hound looked as he stood motionless in the background, flacid tongue dangling as he watched the lunacy unfold before his plastic dog eyes.
It reminded me of the time the Cup was pimped out to the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of the opening ceremonies of the Air Canada Centre back in 1999, but we passed that one off at the time as a drought-induced dimentia that was three decades in the making.
The bottom line is that the Stanley Cup is to be celebrated on an NHL ice surface once a year by one team, and one team only. The Stanley Cup Champions. The Leafs were not the Stanley Cup Champions in 1999 and the Flames were not the Stanley Cup Champions on Tuesday night. They may yet be this year, but not on Tuesday night.
The Habs didn't need a Stanley Cup parade to close the Forum and the Oilers alumni didn't need to hoist it to retire Grant Fuhr's No. 31 (or Wayne Gretzky's No. 99).
So if you're wondering how the lowly Chicago Blackhawks managed to erase a two-goal third period deficit to defeat the Flames - one of the stingiest defensive teams in the NHL later that very same night? Karma, dude. Karma.
Lord Stanley's got your back, Stanley Cup.

To me, the Flames and this ceremony are a joke. Vernon was a good goalie but not worthy of this type of honor. The fact they brought out the cup is pathetic and is evidence of how much the franchise is living in the past. |

Ya that wasn't right or necessary. Vernon on the other hand was worthy by Calgary standards, and only barely by league standards. Look at his numbers and accomplishments and he actually has a decent case. Now by Montreal standards, not so much.
But we should move this conversation to the existing thread on this subject...
