Apparently PHI has waived Leighton, and have elected to go with Boucher and Bob the rest of the way.

I have to say I'm a bit surprised - I assumed that Leighton was the #1 there given his play last year, and that Boucher was the fill-in until he was healthy. Now back from injury, it appears that PHI will go with Bob the rookie and Boucher.

Good move by PHI? I'm almost certain that Leighton will be picked up by someone, his salary is quite low, who are the likely candidates?

Leighton was only their #1 through attrition. I think he had something like 84 different goalies last year. Leighton was the healthy one.

It's a pretty logical move with Bobrovsky playing as well as he had. Pretty nothing move. Leighton will be a back up or KHL bound.

I don't think there was any doubt they would keep Bob, however I am surprised that they elected to keep Boucher over Leighton. Leighton did manage to play pretty well in last year's playoffs, and showed he was a capable goaltender in the finals, you would think PHI would want that sort of experience to backup Bob going forward.

Perhaps it was cap considerations, although Leighton only makes 500K more than Boucher.

Boucher still has Playoff Experience too.
If it were up to me, I would've kept Leighton, not Boucher.

I just saw this recently and didn't know this, but apparently he had a back injury in the pre-season and that made me think that the Flyers know something about it everyone else doesn't and maybe the injury is pretty bad.
Thats the only reason I can think of.

dc, you might be onto something there. It's a possibility, even if not serious, they may be concerned over lingering affects and/or re-injury?

Funny thing is, and i'm sure there's some old threads that could be looked up (but i'm too lazy), there was a lot of talk during and after the finals last year about Leighton and Niemi and just how good they are/were. Neither is with their cup finalist team any longer!

Personally i thought last years stanley cup goal-tenders were the worst duo to duke it out that i have maybe ever seen in the stanley cup playoffs.

Each year there is always 1 goalie at least who stands on their head all the way through the playoffs. Although both goalies had their moments and games last year neither seemed out-standing in my opinion.

The question Philly had to ask themselves, ( since they are a very strong favorite to win the cup ) is ...can Leighton win a stanley cup for us ?? ultimately i think the answer is no, if their management feel this way...then whats the point of keeping him.

This year will probally be the year that Philly makes a move for a goalie with experience at the trade dead-line....what do you think of J.S Giguere going to Philly ?? Improvement ??

I don't think that is an improvement. He won a cup 5 years ago, but what has Jiggy shown over the last 3 years that make you think he'll be an improvement to what the Flyers have now?

Leighton is a mini-version of Chris Osgood's career.

Both shining examples of what an average goalie can do behind a very, very good defense and a very, very well coached team.

I take Boucher over Leighton 6 ways to Sunday but that's just my opinion.

One thing no one has said is that maybe Leighton's injury did not rehab well and that is why he was the odd many out??

Also maybe Leighton wasn't ready to accept a backup role. It is terrible for the locker room in some cases when you got a guy moaning about starts
