In the Sedin twin post, a comment was made about NHL players being "overpaid brats," for which I thought a new post was worthy.
I liked Utemin's response to that assertion: "Overpaid spoiled brats? I'm sorry but do you think singers should get more money then these people? The amount of effort hockey players put in to play the game is more then you can imagine, in fact you can say that for any big name sport!"
I mostly agree. Sure, hockey players (most) make obscene amounts of money, but for the most part they earn their money. (I'm not sure if they work significantly harder than athletes in other major sports though, but I do think they conduct themselves better off the ice.)
Why is there such a double standard between pro athletes and people in the entertainment business?
They're both role models, if you're into that kind of thing. (And you teach your kids that athletes or entertainers are to be respected more than parents, relatives, school teachers, community coaches, etc.)
Look at all the misfits in the entertainment industry, and what they get away with. You get caught with drugs, and it doesn't affect your TV or movie career, but it does (for the most part in pro sports).
Look at Charlie Sheen. He pulls in about $40 million a year ($2 million an episode) for a TV show, and no matter what he does (domestic violence, drugs, hookers, etc.), he keeps his job.
Sure, there are a number of cases where athletes behave badly – less though in the NHL than any other major sport.
Getting back to performance and pay, comments about "mailing it in" are always directed toward pro athletes, but rarely toward people in the entertainment business. I'm not sure why there's a double standard, but we definitely expect more from pro athletes than people in the entertainment industry. And not just how hard they work, but how much they're paid (or overpaid).
At the end of the day, no one holds a gun to the head of pro sports teams owners (or the fans) making them pay the athletes what they're paid, so if you're not getting value for your entertainment dollar, you can vote by not buying a ticket.

Well, most hockey players arn't "brats" but you could argue Nabokov, refusing to play for the Islanders...

I fail to see any double standard applied to pro sports athletes as opposed to actors. They both make millions, and as the person makes more and more in their respective job, they can get away with more and more.
The highest paid sports athletes can get away (and have) with murder - literally. Same as the highest paid actors, producers, and . . . anyone who makes a lot of money.
It just makes more sense from the pro side that they take better care of their bodies, so much of the abuse is muted unless it is performance enhancing (steroids, cocaine, etc.).
I think hockey players IN GENERAL are much better adjusted to not become totally arseholes, in that many come from small towns and have a more grounded upbringing - but it certainly doesn't preclude them from being jerks like anyone else.

Good topic!!
Guest, I totally get where you are coming from. I do, however, believe that most NHLers are overpaid. But not nearly to the same extent as say baseball or basketball, soccer or even football.
In my opinion hockey is by far the most exciting game/sport to watch, football being second. And as a pro athlete, you will not be able to play until you are 60, and thus should make your lifes earnings by the time you reach 35-40. But even so, it doesn't give you the RIGHT to treat normal people like dirt(eg. Kane punching a cabbie for 60 or 80 cents. What a CHEAP PRIK)
As far as Hollywood is concerned, y'all could NUKE it, for all I care. Actors are highly overpaid, and completely useless. They are highly paid because World Governments love the distraction from things that matter. (eg. If you are watching "B"-grade tv shows,or even sports for that matter, you are not researching the important things in your life)
As for singers/bands, not all of them are overpaid. Most teeny boppers make a lot of coin because they are brain washing our youth(paid for by Disney) and bands like U2 are rich because they are always in the public eye. (very opinionated about the environment etc.) However, most GOOD musicians only really make money on concessions and such.
Now I understand that a Hockey player will make more $ than me because as an electrician I wont attract 20,000 fans to come watch me wire a building, but the income gap between the rich and the poor is getting larger every day.
If they pay the players less, the owners make more. So, its really a moot point until we all stop supporting them. Same goes for Actors with tv/movies, and CRAP like TMZ. Until we stop following the carrot, we will never realize we are on a treadmill.

NHL players are paid reasonably based on the industry that they are in. By the CBA, I believe that they get 54% of league revenues, and their collective salaries are tied to league revenues - so as the league does better, they do better. I see nothing wrong with this, and actually think its good to tie salaries to the league in this way.
The relative hardness or easiness of a job does not dictate your pay - there are loads of examples of individuals that make lots of money due to the industry they are in, or the risks that they take in their industry. |

I didn't realize this is how it worked. It does make sense to link the league revenue to player salaries. Good strategy.
Now clearly I got a little ranty in my last post. Sorry guys. But, out of all major sports, hockey players are the most reasonably paid. Basketball, baseball, and golf seem to be the worst.
IMO, NOBODY is WORTH $20M /yr. NOBODY!!

LMAO T-RAV tell that to the top CEO's in Canada who earned more then the average citizen by Jan 2nd. 40,000 in 2 days TOTAL FOR YR = 7,260,000 this does not include stock option dolllars and yr end bonuses which range typically in the millions. By no means do athletes & other public figures deserve such extreme figures but they atleast entertain the public and in a way keep peoples morale up and give our kids something to aspire. CEO's worked their a** off to get where they are but now simply reek the benefits of everyone elses hardwork. If athletes & entertainers do not perform they are tossed under a rug and their means of living gone (Alexander Daigle, Vanilla Ice etc)

vanilla ice is doing fine has his own t.v show, Alexander Daigle cant be that bad off, he did make a bit of a comeback a few years ago as a defensive forward, so i dont think he's that bad off, so no all get thrown under the rug they just find a different way. |

Baseball and basketball are definitely ridiculous. I'll NEVER forget when Kevin Garnett turned down a 120million dollar offer only to sign for more a week later! Crazy!
As for golf, sure, they make a lot of money, at least those at the top do, but what i like about that is they have to perform to do so. It'd be like hockey players getting paid by performance. A guy like Kovalchuk wouldn't be making quite as much this year as he did in years past! |

The NHL also makes the least out of all the professional sports leagues in North America, by far, so the low paycheque stands to reason.

Didn't Vinilla Ice do exactly what you said "reek the benefits of everyone elses hardwork" as in steal the Ice Ice Baby song?
Golfers get paid perfectly.....if you crap the bed you have to sleap in it, if you show up ready to go you'll get paid simple as that. |
