I just read this on TSN.ca:
Quebec City mayor Regis Labeaume and Quebec Premier Jean Charest announced Thursday that plans for a new $400 million arena will go ahead with a 50-50 funding arrangement between the province and city.
Looks like hockey is comin' back to Que !!

well actually, the city of Quebec is building an arena which will also allows to have bigger musical venue, it's not only a matter of hockey. Mr Bettman told Quebec city taht if they want a team, they need a new rink, they have the rink (in 10 years till int sontruct) but now will they have a team? expansion? or a team gets to move?

Yeah... I must admit, I am getting tired of paying for arenas and sporting venues, all outside of my City.

I am totally against the building of sports venues with tax dollars. I know that many of you young posters will feel blase about this, seeing as you aren't really adding that much to it while in school, etc . . . but when you look at how much money is made from proffessional sports, there is zero excuse for letting some weasely politician's hands in your pockets.
That being said - any sign that another team is moving to Canada is a good sign. Yes, another team should have come to Toronto area first, and a long time ago. Perhaps Winnipeg should be getting a team before Quebec City. But whatever happens, I will tell you this: any american team moving back to Canada will be a huge moral victory against the Evil Empire currently running the NHL, headed by Gary "The Count" Bettman.
It'll be a win for the fans, so here here! One step forward.

Slozo, taxpayers money is only a bad idea when the taxpayers do not benefit from the profits. One has to remember than most of these arenas have a lot more than hockey going on and are money makers not money takers. The only stupid move for government to do is to not take advantage of the gate. It's a stupid move when they give up total control and revenue to someone other than the government.
That being said, stadiums are municipal and provincal, not federal. The tax payers of an entire country should not pay for the benefits of one city. Olympics not included.
Now, I think it's great that Quebec City is going ahead with building a new facility. As Slozo said, more viable teams in Canada is a good thing for hockey. Viva le Nordiques! |

Looks like hockey is comin' back to Que !!
But this is far from guaranteed, and Bettman is already on record as saying that. Just because you build it does not mean that they will come. |
